That's the one. Well done. Greened.

Any idea what it's called in Thai?

The bamboo rats are the natural hosts for the disease-causing mold, Penicillium marneffei, which is endemic in all species in South-east Asia. In this area, Penicilliosis due to the mold is the third most common opportunistic infection in HIV-positive individuals.

I might avoid it in a sandwich.

Thank you. Yes, she moved us. Just stood there and watched, but no eye contact.
The BPs, yes well they are best avoided. Some one up the thread talked about going on a working boat. Brilliant idea. It'd just need a bit of working out. Traveling with the Thais is great. Everybody shares and it's just a party.

Are you planning a trip?

A couple more on Chiang Kong port.
If you're coming by bus to CK you'll get dropped off at the bus station which is conveniently place about 4 km from the port. It's a fair walk so tuk tuk is advised. They'll charge you 30 - 40 baht EACH. Its a regular event to see disgruntled back packers having to pay up when they thought it was 30-40 baht for the 2 of 'em.
Any way, you'll taken down the main drag through town 'till you get here.

The immigration building is the big place on the left.

When the tuk tuk drops you off you'll see a small shop. This is Tom and Sarah's place.
Cold beer, books, etc etc. Plus a lot of good info. A good place for a sit down and a bit of a yarn and watch the world go by.
Tom's the bloke with the JD. Sarah speaks good English. There's also a restaurant near bye that'll bring the food to your table at the bar. The foods good and cheap but can take a while to prepare. They also tend to put sliced carrot in everything including the eggs to make them look pretty. Carrot can be omitted upon request.

Right, part two kicks off on the 27th of this month. Boat, (hopefully a working boat this time, thanks for the tip) all the way through to Vientiane and then fly back. Any body done the boat from Luang Prabang through to the big V?

Any suggestions appreciated.

I'm bumping this to see if anyone has any up to date info on boats from Luang Prabang on down the river. The Mekong is low right now and it'd be a good time to do the trip.

Any info would be good.

Have to be careful there, lob

The rules are changing and you can only get a re-entry permit from your assigned immigration office now
