Frankie Takes a Hike In Chiangmai

Couple a folks have put up their neighborhoods. I knw they were stealin' my thoughts and just beatin' me to the gun, But I thought I'd share a walk I take from time to time to get away from the flickerin' screen of this computer.
Startin' out I like to walk by next-door-neighbor's, They've been livin' outside i nthis hill camp for a but 2-3 months now the house is coming along. Guess when they're done they'll move on to the next and let the owners move in.

They've got running water out-back (a creek) and the tall roof is their kitchen. At night the hang our around the camp-fire and keep pretty quiet. from my seat here I can see 'em cooking each night
I'll skip the next half kilometer 'tl we come to the park and hill tribe museum. the museum sits in a nice little pond.

There's little bambo restaurants around three side of the thing we'll take look in a minute.
First let's watch this fool try to get his horsey to go for a swim.
There's a race track & stables next to the lake and there were about five others in there having a nice swim with their handlers. This guy didn't wanna go.

For those of you that like golf...
I think this is the back door... it's across the street from the lake.

The lake's about 3, maybe 400 meters square. I walked one length and came to this place where they got...

    it's open to the public...
I told I was shooting some pics for a piece about things to do in Chiangmai he offered me a great deal on some target practice, buy 500 baht of bullets and shoot the gun of my choice. Tell 'i Frankie sent ya, i'm sure he'll give ya the same deal.
No farang have popped themselves here.
    Yet

After dooin' over the fine pieces he had I took a strol through one of my favorite strollin' places. it's an old decaying park 'cross the street from the bank of Thailand.

    I like this ol' bridge.

Like I said the parks old and has several of these bridges throughout lot's of couple snugglin' on the lawn I tried to catch some action for the exhibitionist thread but it weren't to be. All They seemd to be doing was drink Chaang and eatin' BBQ!

    More to come

    Is the range noisy Frankie?

I used to live about a mile from Bisley in the UK and I could hear the shooting all the time at the weekends - got so that it was a background noise you just filtered out.

Shit man I work 'bout 10 12 hours a day. Livin' in Chinagmai, That's ow ya do it.

Anyway after walk n the park it's nice to relax by the lake sippin' a whiskey and nibblin' on some food.
    BUT..
After a look at the kitchen

    and the washing facilities:

I decided a nice, sealed bottle of water was a good idea.

Funnily enough, I never once saw one of them, 'Clean Food Good taste' sings in the whole walk. Some of the places were much cleaner and well set up.
This one looks a bit tacky but was nice and clean(ish) inside.

    Even had a private sookah;

    Very nice lobhy area,

Was the only spot onthe lake with moe than a couple o cusomters.

The place had full menu the pigs innards and roasted pig fat is what they folks like to chew on while drinkin' their whiskey. I'd eat there.
One of the things about chinagmai you see so many of these cherried-out restored hondas, BMWs and other crap we just threw away back home

Lot's of folks head this way in the afternoon for a bit of relaxation and exercise.

The lady n the background there is pretty generous with the sticky rice. 5 baht worth goes the two of us for a couple a meals.
    The only rice I'll eat.
Maybe tomorrow I'll take a hike up through the teak farm and head into Wat jed yot the 'back way' that's another one kilometer the other way. snap a few shots let you 'city slickers' see how the other half lives.

Hey Frankie, great post. I go there regularly when I've got frang friends visiting and I want to show them somewhere the tourists don't go. The pond with the restaurants and the hillside museum is behind the park called Suan Luang Lor Gow, and a red bus will take you there from the centre for about 20 baht each. Takes less than 10 minutes. The only bone of contention for me is sitting around those low tables on those squashed mats for a long time - kind of uncomfortable after a while for us big-boned frangs. But on the upside, you can stay there for as long as you like, the food's good and tasty, the beer's cheap and the scenery is great.

    Here's a pic:

And here's dad about to tackle gaeng som bet sa.

Went into the Hill Tribe museum. Thee's signs sayin no pics but no one to enforce it. I didn;t take any. They've got a library there, was closed becausethe librarian had to to some family function or something the lady tried to tel me the whole story... never mind i'll come back. "No no no!!! I can open it!"
Nice folks didn;t cost a dime. They tell me I cme when it opens I can have the run of library. So takin' me notebook (real paper one) and doin' some research for my hill tribe articles.
I told the some of the operators about puttin these on the internet they were fallin' over themselves tryin' to get in the pic and help out.
    Internet pics = Farang customers!
    Then the Dog shows up!
There goes my free sticky rice!

    Great thread Frisco.

Nothing quite good enough to get me on a bus but it's nice to be introduced so vividly to somewhere folks are always telling me to go see.

    Nearly 4 years in Thailand.

Overnight train and one night in Vientianne.
    1/2 day trip to Pattaya.
    2 nights in Pattaya.
    1 night in Pattaya.
    4 nights in Hua Hin.
    3 nights in Ayuttaya.
    4 nights on Samui.

46 weeks in various bars and massage joints.

what can I say. I've been north, south, east and west but never too far from a naked breast!

I too, have spent 4 years in Thailand and never been to CM, although I've travelled a bit more than Pooly:

    6 months in Samui
    3 months in Pattaya
    4 months in Surin
    1 week in Kanchanaburi
    4/5 times to Hua Hin
    1 week in Pranburi

Would really like to get up to CM, though, as it looks great and it's probably a bit cooler than here. Starting to get hot again, isn't it?

It's worth it. 'bout four years back; bar fined "Miss Song Khran" there.

Today thought I'd take walk up to Wat jet yod. After a relaxing walk through the neighborhood, down a few back streets and around some beautiful garden spots (Photos of that comng later), I arrived at a back gate leading to the wat.

There's waiting area there and a little history lesson.
Hope ya'll can read this; Tried to get it small enough to fit, yet big enough to read

After a bit reading you're ready to absorb some fo the historical semi-ruins
One more "back door" to slide through.

The area isn't real touristed up and there were few Farang 'round; mostly monks and few ladies praying, a few selling incense. Very calm and peacful place.

This youngster was intrigued by the big white ape crawlin' all over his personal wat. He hung there, in the gate to his school playground, watchin' my every move for a while.

This is the reason the wat has it's name "Jet Yod." Ok; it's seven "top/peak/spire" whathaveyou, no real transliteration forthcoming but it's them seven points on one chedi, sure you get the idea. Sorry about the quality of this shot impossible to get a decent angle.

    Some detail:

There's lot's more to see it's good for a peacful afternoon. No touts, tuk-tuks or pushy postcard sellers. The place has been there for over 500 years. Being from the US, this impresses the hell out of me.
There is an area, nearer the Super Hiway, with foundations and reflecting ponds of old; unrestored only excavated and left there for you to wander among.
It's right off the Super hiway a ten minute walk east of the Amrai Rincome Hotel. It's visible from the hiway.

After an afternoon wakin' all over hell I had some need for nourishment so on the way back tothe pad I stopped off for a quick plat of Khao Phat Nam. This place is great, fried rice is 20/25 baht and coke 10.

it's run by a couple of spinster sisters and they can cook!
Unlike most 20 baht-a-plate joints the place is spotless, the cutlery solid and the plates stoneware

The servings are usually much larger and this was one o' them 25 plates! I asked why. They told me it was the cost of good nam. Will admit, was the best khao Phat nam I've had n Chiangmai yet, no skin and tangy sausage bits with carrots, tomatoes and all kinds of other veggies in there.
35 Baht? I could live with it.
Maybe later this week I can put up some pics of another secret restaurant I found. If anyone's looking for a one room wood house up on silts sitting in the middle of a garden for 2500/mo; stick around. I've got loads more pic of my neighborhood to show ya'll.
