MaeRamPheung and beyond, Rayong

Post mortem- the following morning we headed for home. There's a big Makro store just on the Pattaya/ Ban chang edge of Rayong on Rte 36, great place to pop into and pick up some cheap bulk shopping. Stocked up here.

Then cruised back to lake Mabprachan near Pattaya, getting there comfortably early to see Kasey Stoner win the Australian motorcycle Grand Prix. We watched this at Sami's Bar (ne' Da Bar), which has a nice flat screen TV. Yesterday night treated ourselves to a nice roast leg of lamb, purchased at Makro.

I think I'll take it easy for the rest of the week, it's rough going when you've got guests in town.

Suan Som mate- nice place for families to picnic under the many trees and frolic on the Beach. It goes for a few km's too- Only just outside Ban Phe.
After the road goes inland for a few hundred metres you get the bigger resorts, and more Farang tourist oriented. I guess these resorts like to be directly on the Beach.
MaeRamPheung is basically mixed Thai & independent farang travellers. So they've all got their different character, which is good.

Thanks for great photos and thread I shall be retiring to los early next year and travelling for a year before settling in one place so threads like yours are very helpful I will be adding Mairampheung to my list of places and areas to see

I was at Maerampheung Beach a couple of weeks ago, not sure where I was coming back from but decided to stop at Mikels Restaurant for a quick snack, not too bad but a bit bland, also they covered the chips in salt and I think that should be left up to the customer, then again what should I expect with chicken nuggets and chips

ie on blandness, think the meal was 160baht, quite a rustic setting and good service.

This place is just a coupla doors down from the Novotel.
Far better than the Novotel IMO.
1700 per on weekdays, 2k on weekends, includes breakfast.
Recommended.

Well I had reason to go to Mae Ram Pheung again recently, as I was dropping a guy off at the Ban Phe ferry to Ko Samet. It was just a day trip- MRP is only a 45 minute drive from home. But a nice, sunny day to take some pictures.

Well first, thought we'd have lunch at TamNanPar restaurant:-

^ This lake is outside the main restaurant complex. I think there are plans to build a resort there, but on hold like everything else in Thailand.

TamnanPar, also called the Classic Forest restaurant, has a large menu- you can eat Thai food, Thai/Chinese, or Farang. Even some slightly exotic stuff.

This nice big fish was 400bht-

In our party of five, the other two farang males were German. Zey vould be having none of this Thai scheisser- food must be similar to zat served in ze Fatherland

. The falang food isn't the cheapest you'll find, but each meal comes with a salad and a bread roll for starter-

And the main courses are a fair size too, which almost excuses the price- 400bht for the duck breast, 300bht for the pork steak. The duck was good, the pork pretty boring really, but it seemed to hit the spot with my teutonic friend. Scattered elsewhere are some of the dishes the girls ordered- way too much food, as usual. We ended up doggy bagging half of it.

Anyway, the total bill for five came to 2385 bht, but being generous folk we left 2500bht. Can't complain about that really, it's a nice place. The Teutonics disgraced the Fatherland however, they were only able to drink a smallish amount of beer because they were hungover. The view from our table-

MRP is at it's best during this time of year, as opposed to my previous photoes which were taken during rainy season. There are more people around, but you could hardly call it crowded- nowhere near. It hasn't changed- maybe a couple more restaurants and bars, but you'd hardly notice. There is a new Japanese/Korean place near Mikels German restaurant, which is nice to see- but I didn't see any Japs. Yet.

Some decent accomodation offers around too. The Bayview, which is a nice place with nice little bungalows, is offering rooms from 800bht. At the other, more discerning end, The Reggae Hut (near mikels) is offering rooms from 200bht.

This chang came along and extorted some money from us.

Then was on his merry way, in search of the next victim.

Classic Forest, one of my favorites. From the looks of your photos, there must have been a massive clean up effort. MaeRamPheung is one of filthiest beaches I've seen in Thailand.

Have you been to Mae Phim about 20 kliks down the road? That place is booming and is a much nicer beach.

I've been to the beach where the Novotel is which couldn't be far away, not sure if that counts as Mae Phim beach though- but it's nice. MRP was pretty clean in my last visit, but during the rainy season the beach is not great- theres a fair bit of debris and litter.

Actually part of the reason I like the place is it's tattiness, & some bars & restaurants. It's also very easy to get to- less than one hour drive. I'm not usually one for manicured beach resorts, & the last thing I want to do is lie on a beach all day. Mae Phim I've heard has quite a lot of farang houses built or being built, it's kind of being developed as a model community. I'll definitely check it out

I was just at Classic Forest a coupla days ago too, maybe I was there when you were.

Stayed at a Thai resort near Mae Phim, close to the new Marriot that's going in - this area is getting ready to explode.

Private beach at a Thai resort, which means you hardly ever see anyone out in the sun. Had the beach all to ourselves.

Down the road at Mae Phim town. Great seafood joints here.

There are some nice resorts in the Mae Phim area, but it's still very much a Thai beach, similar to MaeRamPheung, only a lot cleaner.

Nice stuff.

I know a developer called Logans does quite a lot of building around there- seems they market mainly to Scandinavians.

Is there much more going on real estate wise Bex?

Yes, there's the big condo/Marriott Hotel complex, Oriental beach and several others. These developments are west of MaePhim cape, near Novotel, in the area east of Ban Phe.

To get to Mae Phim beach proper, you've got to keep driving another few cliks past this area. Past the royal residence, turn the corner and it's a long beach that ends in Mae Phim town.

It's amazing that it took so long for the area to be developed, being so close to BKK.

I don't know about a so-called model community, that sounds a bit exaggerated. I think if you like MaeRamPheung, you'd certainly enjoy Mae Phim. Same vibe of a Thai beach, cheap seafood, plenty of variety and "tattiness," only without the factory pollution and garbage that characterizes MaeRamPhueng.

This last one was a beauty. Especially liked the food, beach and accommodation pics.

Buses run every 30 minutes along that stretch of coast during the day and I intend to do some more exploring in the area when I finally retire.
Lots of seafood produced in that area and all different kinds of fruit when you get up towards Chanthaburi.

A road trip indeed- I live in Ubon these days. When I'm down in Pattaya for a few days I'd be quite open to going there though, I like the place. Also curious to check out the beach area that bexar was mentioning.
