The view from the pier..


Wat Arun, locally known as Wat Chaeng, is situated on the west (Thonburi) bank of the Chao Phraya River. It is easily one of the most stunning temples in Bangkok, not only because of its riverside location, but also because the design is very different to the other temples you can visit in Bangkok. Wat Arun (or temple of the dawn) is partly made up of colourfully decorated spires and stands majestically over the water. Wat Arun is almost directly opposite Wat Pho, so it is very easy to get to. From Sapphan Taksin boat pier you can take a river boat that stops at pier 8.

We made are way back via tuk tuk, at the road entrance there was this quite local restaurant serving a monk selling the tastiest chicken fried rice i've ever eaten!

Wat Arun canvas pasted on to my wall ,

Didn't get an opportunity to see the Wat illuminated at night, looks stunning.

Interesting to note that photos taken of the very historic and revered Wat Arun during the periods of the 1860s into the turn of last century appear to be even more dramatic - before being eaten up by the modern cityscape - as the panoramic center-piece dominated the area.

Aside that, the immediate Chao Phraya shoreline and surrounding area have quite a fascinating history.

Yeah, 'stunning' is over-cooking it a tad.

Those evening meal cruises are worth the effort though.

Wat Arun sure looks better remodeled. Before it looked a bit like a grey lump.
