Tourists are in a subset of traveler. Within the sphere of "traveler", you find people who do that for work, study, sport, pleasure, retirement, homelessness or just sightseeing and relaxation. All tourists are travelers....but not all travelers are tourists. Some tourists travel like amateurs, and others have learned the art of not being readily identified as such. Humphry Bogart was the guy that knew that art....at least within the confines of the characters he portrayed.

I have twin boys ... Identical Twins, but in character, on many things, they couldn't be more different.

Twin 'J' is a Tourist. He has a goal in mind and gets there fast and then moves onto the next thing.

Twin 'B' is a Traveller, I call him Captain Slow because, to him time, 'his' time as compared to 'our' time shall not walk the same path.
But, he senses and records everything on his journey.

Each beautiful boys, each with a different perspective.

    Indicative photo only ...

BTW ... 'Traveller' has been added to my USA based spell checker lexicon ...

There are 2 kinds of people; those who think flying is glamorous and cool and those who have done it too much.
You're in a machine flying 800 km/h, 900 meters above the ground. Its okay to continue to have a sense of wonder about it all, despite the lack of reasonable leg room and cramped toilet.

I don't know that "Travelers" get on planes.
In my old backpacking days, I didn't fly, but traveled around the world without flying (was my goal), or trekked from Mexico to Canada along the ridgeline of the Rockies.
I like to think of Travelers in that limelight, rather than the hordes of "tourists" i see at airports, wearing their singlets and flipflops, with heads in their cellphones.

It's a question of semantics I think. A tourist will stay in good hotels and visit temples (in the east) or museums (in the west) and prefers the company of other tourists whereas a traveler attempts to immerse herself in the local culture and pursues activities that brings him in contact with the native people. Then the difference between travelers and tourists is the amount of money spent during their journeys and the kind of activities they pursue, innit?

We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.

Ah, but this is a bit too simplified. Many a traveller spend more than tourists - think Chinese package tours versus a visitor mixing with the local middle class.

And what of me, or people like me? I am a tourist, but I don't stay in flash hotels. But yes, I prefer the company of other tourists or travelers, like in the hostels/guesthouses/hotels that I've stayed in. Sometimes I travel with.company, but I can also travel alone. My situation is not unique, as there are other young professionals, sometimes Asian, sometimes not, who travel when their time & budget allow it. The ones with day jobs, who visit temples, museums & churches, rivers & mountains too. There are museums too in the east - they're not lumited to the west. I travel with a backpack, not a suitcase, but I'm not a long-term, dreadlocked backpacker. I prefer to call myself a budget traveler.

Likesay, it's a question of semantics, innit? Tourists, travelers, backpackers, whatever, are just words that allow us to characterize people, in relation to a social context, w/o recognition of one's potential and qualities as an individual, EH?

Its rather amusing sometimes when you talk to someone on the plane and they are adamant they will not be doing the tourist thing, but when they tell you their first port of call, you can smile smugly knowing that they are really still clueless.
And better still, they don't realise that you know they are clueless, so it's one over on the idiot already!

    Everyone's a winner!!
