Brilliant thread! One of your best!
Brilliant thread! One of your best!
I've dragged the Handbag all over Asia, she works hard keeping up with me. I do not piss around when I tour, I tour to see and experience things.
I was that impressed with her efforts on Phu Thok that I drove straight to Amazon and bought her a Green Tea. Get out to Phu Thok and have a nice walk. Cheers.
Thanks Terry, great thread.
Tour hard and tour often, eh Terry!
Deserving of a green.
Nice post, the missus keeps threatening to take me up there. Looks like great fun and I'm well up for it. Just worried about the staying power of the rest of the family. We did a similar trek somewhere in Roi Et but had to turn back before we got to the main cave we were looking for. The path was almost non-existent and the rest of the family were convinced we were going to be eaten by tigers and ran back to base. (It literally took them 30 mins to get back from a 2 hr hike).
I went there last year - long drive from Udon but well worth it.
I'd hate to do it on a wet day or holiday with 1000s of other on the walkways...there were quite a few spots where it was "don't look down, don't look down".
But then I just told myself - the authorities wouldn't let people up there if it wasn't safe...

Sure, there are a few things to avoid if planning to go here.
Do not go in the hot season, Weekends nor public Holidays.
When we went there was only one other farang and only a few locals, bloody brilliant it was.
Also go early morning.
A tad far from Udon to do a day trip though.
Absolutely fantastic, one for the bucket list.
Hats off to y'er lady, not sure about my other half !
Well done and thanks for sharing .
Nice one Terry. I'd send you a green but am clueless as to how.
I did find the rating scale below and thus scored a five out of five even though I don't really believe those are the bones of Elvis.
You and yours made it to the top for some nice pics and I admire that. Those stairs look pretty scary and many would have crapped their pants long before the restroom elevation.
I still think you are overpaying for accommodations though. For example, in January I stayed at the Hilton on Clearwater Beach in Florida for only 315 per night and I thought that was highway robbery! Paying 450 even for a bran new hotel has to really get your goat. Sorry to see they are gouging the hell out of you as you travel about in amazing Thailand.
Seriously though glad your taking the time to post the exploits of a retired fireman.

I have a theory on life. It ain't gona last forever.
I have been giving it a good nudge since my first travels at 17 years old and have no plans of stopping until I can no longer do it physically.
When that happens I'll sit in my lounge room and rehash my travels with my many thousands of photos.
In a few days I'm off to Ubon and will do a road trip, I'm heading up to Taphan hin plitchit.
In early April I will fly to Burium for another and Mid April will fly back to Perth to see my mates and go on another road trip up North to go fishing.
I worked 40 years of my life and have a few bucks in my back pocket to keep on truckin.
Keeping fit and healthy mate, the key to it all is to not let ones self turn into a fat pleb and to have the money to do the good stuff.
All those stairs has given me a bit of a yearning for Nepal maybe later this year.
Terrific thread Terry ! Good on ya.
How many hours from bottom to top and back?
How many stairs did you count? (Just joshing.)

To really have a nice experience you need at least 4 hours to go over it.
That's with stops on each level and a good going over the goat track on the top.
We knocked it over in 2.5, it was a quick look see, I wanted to get to Nong Bua Lamphu that day.
We will go back next year, we plan to spend the day there and bunk back at Buen Kan.
The organised tours give the Punters 2 hours but that's hardly worth it, If one is not fit the climb up and down would be two hours.
