Where to go at Xmas for a family holiday?

I want to take my family, wife, kids aged 6 + 13 and myself, and my Mum and Dad on holiday for 3 or 4 nights between Christmas and New Year.

The kids need a beach, Mum and Dad can't be to far away from western food and I enjoy a beer or 3.

I've been looking at Krabi and Koh Samui but nothing has jumped out at me yet.

I like my creature comforts so a 4 star resort or hotel is what I am more than likely looking for.

Any ideas for these 2 places or any other Thai destinations are appreciated?
I would post pictures but life's too short.

Any of the bigger resorts have mandatory Christmas and New Years parties that the guests must pay for, plus its high high season then. Book early. Look for deals with Agoda and other booking agencies. Groupon might be a good bet as well.

    Good luck.

Hence the holiday is planned for 3 or 4 nights between Xmas and New Year.

Prachuab has great (and quiet) beaches.

    Accommodation is cheap.

The board walk is the best in thailand.

Hardly any tourists but just enough western food (Twiggs bakery is the ducks nuts) available for your folks.

    On the train line.

    Majestic mountains.

Cleanest town I have ever seen in Thailand.

I stopped a day in prachuap kiri khan last December. High winds, big waves and cold pools is what I remember, your kids will be bored to tears.. I enjoyed Samui a lot more.

    Have a look at Langkawi.

If the beach requirement can be elliminated the Khao Yai area is a great place for Christmas holiday. Lots to do so doubt the kids will be bored.

How would one expect to find the weather in Chaing Mai in December ? I think that is a great place to consider spending your holidays.

Just back from a few days on Samui. Definitely bargains to be had. Some long term popular resorts have actually started advertising basement prices. First time ever in low season.
Even Chaweng was quiet. The piers were fairly busy for full moon on Tuesday but not the usual crush to get on the ferries.
The best night out was in Lamai. I made a late decision to stay overnight and found a small friendly resort on offer for 900bt. When I had checked the same place online in the morning it was 1250bt. Nice water park in Lamai for the kids too.
The south of the Island between Lamai and Nathon is still relatively unspolied and there are some quality resorts there too.

Thanks for all the useful posts and info, 16 posts and no shit slinging, that must be a TD ecord!

Anyway, I ended up booking The Krabi Resort.

Krabi Resort Ao nang - A Thai traditional style resort in Ao Nang with a private beach access.

I'll let you know what it's like in a couple of months time.

We checked with the resort and they say all works will be finished by the start of November, god knows why they haven't changed the message on their site.

Hmmm, I hate the place, I know some folks love it. Some relatives recently came to Thailand for a 3 stop holiday: Bkk, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui; loved the first two, hated Samui - I told them to go to Krabi, but they wouldn't listen; came back and said they'd wished they'd gone to Krabi...

Khao Yai and homestay. Well, I'm not at home, as long as you look after the MiL and the one remaining cat then feel free to stay at mine (about 30 minute drive from waterfalls in Khao Yai NN)...

^ hmmm, not sure I could justify charging. Just keep the place clean and tidy, put some food in the fridge from time to time...

Nice to see you're still alive, Stoker. Did you make the plane or just get drunk in Bkk for a week?
