    Rayong or Samet?

Me and my lady friend want to get away this weekend to either Rayong or Samet (Fri-Mon).

I'm not too bothered - she's driving us.

    Any suggestions?

I've been to Samet two or three times. But never been to Rayong.

She recommends a place on Samet called Vong Duern Villa.

    What's your take?

I was in koh samet last week baas, Enjoyed it but we stayed on the main (Touristy)beach. Up to you , what do you need? Nightlife? Recalling your last couple of posts you didn't like boracay and got bored in Phnom Penh, How about a schmoke and a pancake? A bong and a waffle? NO? Ach, there is no pleasing you

You have been to Rayong actually- because the ferry to Samet leaves from Ban Phe, in Rayong. Personally, there are a few beach resorts along the Rayong coast I would prefer to Ko Samet- but each to their own. You've got the Rayong Resort and Novotel- both of which look out onto Samet, you can even hire a boat if you're bothered, or get the ferry. Untold more resorts along the coast heading towards Chantaburi too. Samet would have been a good look see 15 years ago, but it's pretty overdone now imo, and overpriced with it.

    I'll admit I'm a slightly fussy traveller.

Boracay pissed down with rain and gail-force winds.

PP was bearable - I think I would have come to like it if I'd spent more time there. It had a Hanoi-ish feeling - people not too friendly. Wrote a review on the hotel we stayed in and the 'manager' replied with a pissy 1000+ reply.

I'm with a lady this time, so it should be chilled and 'comfy'.

So, we're going away for the weekend again - this time the choice is Chantaburi or Rayong.

How does a night in Chantaburi and two in Rayong sound?

Places there are cheaper than the gaff I stay in in Bangkok, so I'm not fussed.

Last little bit of peace, before I head off to China for another three month contract (only for the $$$ - get in get out mission).

My home is about 10 mins from Ban Phe.
Try going a few miles east of the Novatel to the next town. Great quiet good food and beaches.
Samet was my favourite place on the planet 10 years ago. Shit now.

As you have wheels, I would take off to Mae Pim for the weekend. Chilled beachfront restaurants and a very long beach you can follow all the way from Bang Phe.

Loads of lovely little beaches down dirt tracks off the road from Bang Phe to Mai Ping and some great little resorts of all ranges of price and luxury.

Sound good. Can you perhaps give me/us the names of a guest house you like there?

I'm on Agoda looking at Rayong hotels and guesthouses as we speak..

Sea Sand Sun Resort Rayong Rayong, Thailand: Agoda.com

    Condos rented out to holidaymakers..

Try this stayed there couple of years ago, about 15 mins from ban phe and get ferry to samet.

    nice hotel good food.

they also have speed boats on beach that go samet.

Hotel Novotel Rayong Rim Pae Resort: book your hotel in RAYONG at a special internet rate.

Vongdeuan is also the quiet part of samet but infested with rats but nice beach and pretty.

Was at Rayong this weekend. Ate at some pretentious place called The Bizarre or something. Had to order food off an iPad and they added dry ice to every soft drink available making it look like some witches coven.

Some nice tottie walking about though!

Baas, keep it under your hat, but as you approach Mai Pim from Ban Phe you will see a little lane on your right with a Coke sign. Great beach! Just before this on your left is a great Northern Thai style resort with Lana style bungalows and a great pool for a 1000bt a night. Unbeatable.

Keep it on the down low - oops!

If you've been to Koh Samet a few times then it's definitely worth exploring Rayong this time.

If you spend a night in Rayong city try The Rayong Brew for a night out.
    Really good.

Jaysus - never even knew there was a Rayong Town proper. We hopped in the car and popped over to Ban Phe for lunch, and the beach in the evenings for cruddy seafood.

This woman has the ability to sleep A LOT. Thank god she's a decent driver - we saw three flipped cars on the way there and back to Bangkok. And parts of the road are in a right shite state.

She wants to drag me to Tachai island or the Similan islands in January, via Phuket (which I've managed to avoid for 15 years of visiting/living in Thailand).

I'd rather hit up the Vietnamese coastline (www.junglebeachvietnam.com) or Penang and Lankawi - way less filthbags.
