    Info on Koh Chang

I have a mate thinking of crossing the border to holiday on Koh Chang. Can people reccomend hotels and provide a but of background on the place. What is the difference between the east and west sides? Is one side better depending on the seasons?
My mate also asked if there are bars with girls there?

The west side has the beaches. White Sand Beach is the most commercial with more upscale resorts and night life. Chai Chet and Klong Prao are fairly quiet with nice resorts, but you need a car or bike to get to amenities. Taxi's are expensive at night. Kai Bae is cheaper than White Sand with nightlife and restaurants. Lonely Beach is the backpacker party zone with cheap accommodation and reggae bars. The girlie bars are mostly in Chai Chet and White Sand, but there are a few in the other areas. Both sides of the island get a lot of rain, Koh Chang is the rainiest place in Thailand after all.

Pissing down raining everyday at the moment and as dead as a door nail tourist wise. Many hotels closed down due to lack of punters.

    Actually suspecting a Typhoon today.

Sounds like a typical rainy season on Koh Chang.

^ When I was there a few weeks ago it pissed it down like I have never seen and we almost got washed off the hilly section not far from the ferry port.

That section of road must be the most dangerous I have ever driven on.

Anyway, how you getting on in Canukville mate?

A big chunk of it was washed out a few years ago from landslides. There was no power for about 4 days.

It's ok pal - your secret is safe with us.

Opposite Chang Buri resort in white sands is a collection of beer bars. The saddest example of beer bars I have seen to be honest.

Its too rainy to go now. This was the last big mudslide 3 years ago. Kept people on the island for a couple of days and as Pickel says knocked out the power for up to 4 days.

This is just where LT said on the hilly bit near the port.

Like others; I would advise your friend to go elsewhere June-Sept. Not only rainy season; but the shore currents can be quite strong in the rainy season. Much better to go to Koh Samet; about 1-2 hrs from Pattaya. It is rated to be the sunniest Island in Thailand. Much better amenities. I'd only go to Koh Chang for diving expeditions. Many more things to do on Koh Samet ... and only 1hr from Pattaya if you know which Tuk Tuk Taxi to take.

I'm not so sure about that. There are way more things to do on KC.

Samet gets a lot less rain than Koh Chang does, but their prices remain the same almost year round. When it rains on KC, it rains hard, but the sun usually comes out every day and room rates are cut in half, or more.
