Yeah I wish that someone had reminded me it was a bank holiday today. I wouldn't have set off for work so early as I was expecting traffic.

My friends up in Chiang Mai and Pai say the traffic this year is the worst they've ever seen. Next year they really ought to think about celebrating the New Year in the Big Mango!

Who'd have thought you'd have to go to Bangkok to escape the crowds?! Bangkok hotels are quite empty and many are running very good New Year holiday promotions right now.

Wireless road near the US embassy earlier today:

Almost creepy how empty the streets are!

I have some friends from Pattaya who booked a package deal at the Shangri La in BKK that includes poolside dinner plus a New Year's eve Horizon cruise with free flow champagne. Don't know where they booked it but he says he got a great deal...

I hear Banyan Tree, the Oriental and the JW Marriott all have New Year promotions going on. Imagine many others do as well. I live here and will probably sleep at home tonight

^Never heard of the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok doing 'specials'. Its the polar opposite of the hotels branding.

Yeah the good deal was 29,999 baht

I arrive tomorrow but already have a hotel booked from the 1st - 4th and 6th-9th but just need those two days filled. Given no one knows the Bkk situation after then 2nd I might just wait till the last minute to find somewhere.
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

    what indicator ?

traffic is a bit like remembering the old days when you could scoot around
town with no traffic jams, easy to forget, bit like rural surin's old picture thread.
the downfall of any modern city now is traffic, pollution, crowds,
at least it is good to have a few days off from it.

there is no great deals in luxury hotels in Bangkok, au contraire, they charge 3 times their normal inflated price

I am sure many of them offer their great buffet for 6,999 THB instead of the usual 1,999 THB

during holiday season, there is always those great surcharge, so yeah, great deals for the hotels

Sorry to disagree, spending the weekend on the 16th Floor of the Swissotel with a great view. Cost a whopping $68 a night, I paid $76 to include the breakfast buffet.

The protests and threats are killing the Bkk hotels.
