What to do in and around Loei and is it worth visiting?

    Hi there all,

this weekend I have off due to the boat racing so we have decided to get away from the festivities (They're always the same anyhow) And go on a little weekend trip leaving early on Saturday morning.

The idea is to go to Loei which appears quite scenic and mountainous, just wandering if anyone has any advice of where to go and what to see? Or are we actually wasting our time in going there at all....

    Thanks in advance

It has some good festivals, but thats no use to you.
Quite picturesque, and there is a spot on one of the roads where if you put your car in neutral, a sort of optical illusion makes it look like you are rolling uphill, which the thais all take as gospel and the work of powerful spirits.

There are threads here on Loei, but I am cooking dinner while checking in, look in the northeast Northeast forums.

There's a great German Steakhouse in town centre... owner Chris is a really nice guy, great host. I love the area on a bike, lovely scenery, especially the road out to Phu Ruea.

Loei is a nice little town , we only stayed the night so didnt really do much apart from the night market , it has a sort of a moat around it, very pleasant , go a bit further and head for chiang khan on the river, then you can come back along the river to nongkhai in a big loop, that the way we done it anyway. i done a thread also, its at the bottom of this page A weekender in issan
beerlaodrinker ,Good move getting out of vientiane for the boat racing, if youve seen one youve seen em all really and traffics a bitch.

+1! Always look forward to a fantastic meal and plenty of Erdinger at Chris' Steak House when in Loei!

OP - are you riding your bike? If so, Loei is surrounded by fantastic roads- ride off in just about any direction and you'll find some great motorcycle roads.

The 203 from Loei to Lom Sak and on to Dan Sai is a thing of beauty!!

    Thanks for the posts everyone!

I've not actually been to the boat racing here in Vientiane before but in all honesty all the festivals are pretty much the same, once you've seen one you've seen them all! I went to the boat festival last weekend and didn't even see a single boat...just drinking.

Anyhow will be leaving at 6am tomorrow morning, will be driving down as I want to go shopping in Tesco Nong Khai on the way back, really looking forward to the weekend actually! I will report back and make a new thread next week.

    Thanks
