    Lost In The Jungle

Thursday night sitting enjoying a beer I receive a text message from my friend "Want to take the dirt bikes and explore the rainforest tomorrow?". Obviously the answer was yes.

We decided to explore Khao Kheow National Park. Never been before but using Google Earth we thought we could see some tracks and it's not too far to ride from BKK.

Like all good plans we had no plan. Just thought we would try and find a track off of the main road into the trees and make our own way through. Something like this:

Met up at 8am and started the long straight and boring ride there. I think it took about 1 & 1/2 hrs. We werent pushing it as both on dirt tires.

Stopped to fill up with fuel and buy plenty of water before heading up towards the park.

Straight away it felt cooler and the air became fresher. We were told we can enter into the forest near by the waterfall http://teakdoor.com/thailands-travel...-near-sri.html (chan ta then waterfall near Sri Racha).

The little security guy however put an immediate end to that plan as he would only allow us through on foot.

Headed back down the road a bit and found a track that seemed to enter the forest bypassing the security box.

About 5 minutes in and we hit some deep sand. This would be the first of many times I would crash on this trip!

The tracks started off quite easy and passed through some farm land.

We headed towards the trees. No real sense of where we were or headed. Things became a lot more difficult as we headed further into the forest. Nature was on it's way to reclaim the tracks and the dense and tough bamboo made pushing forward quite difficult at times.

Every now and then we would pop out onto small clearings which made a welcome break from the bamboo trying to cut my arms and face into shreds.

A few obstacles in the way.

The forest would also attempt to eat us and our bikes at times too.

Now this bit was funny, we had no real idea where we was and we stopped for a few minutes to drink some water.

Nearby we heard some deep menacing grunts and a huge roar. I nearly sh*t myself thinking we were just about to get eaten by tigers/lions (At the time I didn't stop to even ask myself the question of does this forest have tigers or lions!). Run back to the bikes and it was only when I jumped on the bike I noticed the green fence to my right. We had somehow managed to find a way to the Zoo Khao Kheow Open Zoo and we must have stopped our bikes right next to the lion enclosure on the other side of the fence!

We saw a path along the fence that led out to the road. We had been in this part of the forest for a few hours now and decided we would go and explore a different part. Getting back to the road was easier said than done and there were a few more crashes to be had.

We saw a few sign posts to a reservoir (Can't remember the name) so we headed there.

We got talking to a Thai guy and he pointed us in the direction of the tracks & trails around the area. This was a dirt bike paradise! Miles and miles of tracks to ride. All different terrains from sand to big boulders. Some very technical and slow, some as fast as you could go.

After falling off a few more times, I, being the idiot I am noticed that the highest peak in the distance seemed to have a track running up the side of it. "Let's go there!" I shouted. I'd soon regret this!

It started off a bit tricky but nothing I couldn't handle

But it quickly became incredibly steep. As soon as you lost forward momentum the bike just slid back down and the terrain was extremely difficult. We were in the midday sun and this was getting the better of us. I managed to make it to the top and just passed out. It had taken about 45 minutes and crashed so many times. Each time the bike just got heavier and harder to pick up. If it wasn't for me being at the top my friend said he would have given up and called for help. It was by far the hardest thing I have done on a bike before. I don't think the photos show just how near vertical this was and it never level out so no where to stop and rest unless you crashed!

Some bastard stole the training wheels at the petrol station. Hard to stay upright without them.

Thinking about it, if I was to do this again I think I would make it an over night trip and maybe stay in Bang Sean in the evening.

Although its not too far from BKK, as tired as we were the ride home was painful and probably a little more dangerous than it needed to be due to my brain being boiled for most of the day.

    Yep

I wasn't expecting the sand at first so took me by surprise! And if I stayed upright all day it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun

I have to give ou a lot of credit for making the journey fom BKK, having a great ride, and then dragging yourself back home- it looks like it was loads of fun, but totally exhausting.

Please get to work on those motocross skills, though- you know the top guys never drop their bikes in nearly imposible terrain when their sprockets fill with vegetation and the incline goes above 30*... Man, I would have spent most of the day on my ass (probably with the bike on top of me).
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

It's quite amazing how everytime I picked the bike up It started up on the push of the button.

I maintain my bikes well, regular services etc.

Only damage yesterday were scratches to the plastics and I bent the handle bars a bit. I'll be replacing them soon with higher bars anyway to make it easier to stand while riding.

I don't know what happened to my thread? A lot of the photos I posted have gone although they were there before along with my edit

I'll repost (roughly) what has disappeared.

Getting to the top of that climb was nearly impossible at times.

We had a bit more of a rest at the top once my friend made it up and tried to find a way down. It wasn't as hard as the way up but it was still very difficult.

Once we finally made it down we stopped by the lake to look back on and take in what we had just done!

Decided we would call it a day as we were both knackered and head home, there was one final track to ride along that we also belived would be a short cut back to the main road.
Oh how wrong we was! We ended up lost in a pineapple plantation, to say it was like a maze would be an understatement!

Here is a shot of it from above with Google Earth -

We eventually spotted a car in the distance and found our way out. The journey home was horrible! So so tired, everything was hurting and knowing we had a nearly 2 hour drive home in front of us wasn't nice.

Once I got home I sent the missus out to get me a few beers, I was asleep on the floor by the time she got back from the shop. I can't remember ever being that exhausted before!

    What a day

When we go out like this its just about having fun, dropping the bikes and laughing at each other is a big part of that and as long as no one gets hurt then its all good

Tried a honda cr 250 once it was a nightmare , spent most of its time upside down. that sand like talc is a pain but at least it don't hurt to much when you crash. I will try and post some pics later .
