Here are some of the other roads traveled in and around the Khao Kheow Zoo area as well as some of the beautiful mountain scenery.




























All in all it was a fun and very exercising day. Looking forward to more such rides.

I have a question for you bicycle enthusiasts: I almost never see any of you with a mirror.
Now, I just bought a bicycle and am riding it, sometimes in (heavy) traffic and feel very strange without a mirror. But, I look around and no one seem to use one.
Why not?
I remember 20 years ago we would buy ones that would somehow attach to our helmet. Seems that that was a good idea. But where to find one?

Good point fiddler. I also felt naked without a mirror that allowed me to look behind be to one side. It does not seen to be an accessory item that is common any more. Like you said, there were some that would attach to the helmet and others that could attach to your glasses. I think the mirror is something that is a safety item and is very practical.

I have not really looked for them here in Thailand but I would suspect that some of the better bicycle shops in Bangkok, Pattaya or elsewhere would have them.

Haven't a clue about Merida bikes except that one of the fellows in our group rides one and he likes it. I think he said he paid in the neighborhood of 18,000 baht for it. Not sure of the model. It has front shocks but not aware of what the brand name of the shocks are.

Can not comment on your brother's Trek 9.9. Trek however is a very reputable mountain bicycle manufacturer and there are plenty of Trek bicycles on the road to support their quality and reliability.

All the major manufacturers produce similar bikes or similar quality at given price ranges. Reliable components as well as the frame are important.

Not sure what type of riding your wanting to do JJ but for serious recreational riding, you can can a fair amount for 50K baht.

You looked all tanned and fit when we dropped into your place this afternoon and now I know why.

By the way the dolphin show was pretty good although expensive, 500 Baht for farang and 300 for thai for an hour show.

Farang Red, the Bangkok Hash Hound Bikers sponsor one of their monthly rides once in a while in Phuket. I looked at their schedule and it doesn't look like they have anything in Phuket in the next 6 months. However, there is a Phuket Farang Bicycling group that meets and has organized rides. Wow, that is slightly expensive. Did you show your Thai drivers license or decide just not to go?

Didn't have a choice mate.

As I suspected the show started at 3.00pm, we arrived there at 2.55am after leaving your place, my wife and kids made a beeline to the ticket counter as I parked the car.

I didn't find out the price until we were leaving the venue but hey, my daughters had a great time and to be fair the show was very good.

By the way they had 2 pink dolphins and what looked like to pygmy whales on show.

I've had a Merida for around 6 years JJ. Paid 18k baht for it from a Khon Kaen cycle specialist and it's still going ok although i dont use it so often nowadays.

Very suitable for daily rides as in the OP.

Great report mate. Looked like a great day for cycling. I am really happy you finally got around to putting into pictures your bike travels. I am sure many of us are envious. You are slimming down as well. Or else you have some super fabric on the top and a girdle on the bottom. Well done and thanks.

Now that the weather is a bit cooler, I'm on my old 10 speed more. Haven't got one of those fancy helmets you guys wear but probably should break down and get one. My rides here in northern Suphan aren't as scenic as some of y'alls but still, it's good exercise keeping ahead of the dog packs!

A copy of the Yellow Book works as well to get the Thai price

We have 2 sets of friends of ours that were both working in the ROK the same time we were working there that have a home up in Suphan Buri. Nice country up there and although the countryside may not be as scenic, the roads are plenty flat and the back country roads have considerably low traffic vol. should be nice riding. I'd like to head on up that way again sometime. you up for a ride?

Yeah, i heard they also make frames for specialized? I'm a bit spoilt when it comes to mountain bikes as i used to ride every day at home with 3 of those being around the peaks (Jacobs ladder) in the UK. A friend and I have been considering buying but i'd like to do some rough stuff - not sure that my wrists would take it - but only being able to get the odd good ride a month is putting me off. I can't ride the streets so it means driving out to find somewhere that has plenty of rough up and down, if you know what i mean?

Nice observation Bogon... and since you asked, the whistle is actually an accessory that allow participation in the ride by advising other who may be behind and looking for the off road trail to locate the direction of the pack. Lets just say that it is a helpful tool... it also helps to scare the chasing dogs away.

OK, I'll be honest with you. After a hard push on the open roads and then going on the single and double track off road and grinding it out there with some technical riding and having to get off the bike to push it up some of the more steep and rocky areas I started getting bushed and had my head down on the handle bars while pushing the bike up the hill. The whistle got stuck in the brake cables while my head was down and upon bringing it up, the whistle snapped off the lanyard. I fond the whistle and have it but need to reattach to the lanyard.
