British athlete drowns during a race in Phuket

A British athlete drowned during the swimming leg of the Laguna Phuket Triathlon Sunday morning.

William Scott Stewart, 43, was participating in the race in Thalang district in which there were about 1,000 competitors from around the world.

The leg was about 1,800 metres of sea and lagoon swim.

Stewart got into difficulty and was pulled from the water but was pronounced dead at KrungthepPhuket Hospital.

Stewart had competed in a triathlon in Singapore before arriving in Thailand.

    Dead triathlete “suffered heart attack”

CHERNG TALAY: Laguna Phuket this morning confirmed that Briton William Scott Stewart, 43, died after suffering a heart attack during the swim leg of the Laguna Phuket Triathlon yesterday.

Debbie Dionysius, Laguna Phuket’s Director of Destination Marketing, told the Gazette that Mr Stewart was unconscious when he was pulled from the water. He was then taken to Bangkok Hospital Phuket, where he died at 11:08 am.

She explained that safety staff posted to monitor swimmers were watching Mr Stewart while he was swimming after he veered off course. “He was rescued from the water when he was about 20 meters from shore,” she said.

“He had trained for [the triathlon]. He was a good swimmer, and he had prepared for the event,” she added.

On his registration form, Mr Stewart had not noted any pre-existing medical conditions.

i did the triathlon, and didn't hear anything about it during or after the race. i only hung around for about 45 minutes once i finished (long, long after the winners) but of the 10 people i talked to, none mentioned anything about the death. once i got back to the hotel, however, my gf said she overhead the hotel staff discussing how someone died during the swim. i told her it was just old women making up ghost stories for the future, but it appears i was wrong. bummer.

    this guy's death aside.....

it was a nice event. the 1.2 in the ocean was great --the water was warm and relatively calm. but there was some confusion on behalf of the MC about which side of the sail boat to swim around up to 7 min. before the race started. the lagoon (600 m) was nasty. it was dark, dirty, and had an indescribable taste.

the bike (55 k) was on a scenic course though the naitorn (sp?) hills, the coastline, rubber trees, and small villages---which, by the way, had loads of kids standing on the side of the road offering support to riders.

the run ( a 6k loop that had to be run twice) wound through the laguna resorts' trails, streets and golf course.

i'd like to post some photos, but i have no idea how....do i need to use the photo gallery on this board, or can i just download from photobucket?

^^the mornings are rough (yesterday and today) but once 10 or 11 am comes around, i'm pretty much pain free.

i don't know why the first photo isn't showing....but, it's a quick pre race shot and the second shows people coming out of the lagoon. my GF took most of the photos on her camera, i'll post a few of them here once she puts them on photobucket.

edited by dirtydogNot sure if this works.

absolutely. i had a great time last year....i was shocked at how many people entered.

i'm out this year (a couple of nagging injuries), but fully plan to do it again next year. i've also heard about a mini in krabi in march....and if my calf heals properly i might enter.
