Long boat race set for November
Saksiri Uraiworn
Thailand’s top long-boat racers will compete for cash and prizes at the 9th “Pattaya Longtail Boat and International Sailing Race” Nov. 21-23 at Mabprachan Reservoir.
Mai Chaiyanit, mayor of Nongprue municipality, says officials are already preparing for this year’s longtail boat races in November.

Pattaya and Nongprue officials met July 30 to begin preparations for the sailing competition, which features longtail boats with deep roots in Thai culture. The race will be supported by Chonburi Province and the Thailand Rowing and Canoeing Association.
Trophies will be awarded in six categories: Large boats (55 paddlers), longtail boats (30 paddlers), large boats types A and B, small boats type B and international boats (12 paddlers).

City Hall Promotes Pattaya’s Annual Long Boat Races

CITY HALL PROMOTES PATTAYA’S ANNUAL LONG BOAT RACES

The 9th Annual Long Boat Races will be held on the 21st-22nd of November at the “Lake Mabprachan Reservoir,” and a meeting was held on the 5th of November to promote the event to government agency delegates, officials and people of the press.

Pattaya, November 5th 2009 (PDN): A meeting was held today in Room 401at Pattaya’s City Hall to promote the upcoming Long Boat Races, which is a very exciting spectator event. This will be the event’s 9th year in succession, continuing a tradition that is observed throughout Thailand after the period of Buddhist Lent, considered to be a Royal activity that goes back to the days when Ayutthaya was the Thai Capital.

The conference committee consisted of the Pattaya Mayor Ittiphol Khunplome, Nongprue Mayor Mai Chaiyanit, Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand Nitti Kongrut, local Government official Revat Phonlukin, plus other leading officials. During the meeting they discussed various aspects of planning for the festival and the activities that would be included, and during the meeting various forms of entertainment were used to promote the event. These included, four life sized animal actors, who stood behind the committee and acted in character during the meeting, as well as a entertaining performance put on by the local Kau Portong school children, which was well received.

The Long Boat Races will feature three separate boat races of varying size and design, with the main event as usual being the 55-man strong long boats, followed by the slightly smaller 30-man teams, then the miniature 12-man teams capping off and action packed weekend of racing.

Along with the boat races, this event will also have various other forms of entertainment including the much hyped Buffalo Races and of course the new traditional Klong Yao drum and dance event.

The 2-day festival helps conserve Thai art and culture as well as displaying the Thai’s unique traditional life style, which is considered a national heritage. The event also promotes domestic tourism among Thai people as well as helping to attract many foreign tourists in the area.

It's a good weekend, but over the last few years as it's grown in popularity the traffic along Soi Siam Country Club can be a nightmare. My advice- take the Soi that goes around the other other side of Mabprachan lake, Soi Chaiyapornvitee- It's the one with the sign to the 'Thousand Years Stone Park and Crocodile Farm' when it comes off Sukhumvit, not far from Mcdonalds.

A newish and decent pub on Soi Siam, close to the action is the Rendezvous- decent farang and Thai nosh too. The nearest 'naughty girl' bars are Sami's by the lake, and CC Roadhouse on Soi Siam. And you just happen to drive by the Black Pearl if you take Chaiyapornvitee...
