Phuket Food Festival

Phuket Food Festival

PHUKET CITY (SAPHAN HIN): A four-day 'Phuket Local Food Festival' starts today at Saphan Hin.

The festival, organized by the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (OrBorJor), aims to promote Thai food to holiday makers and other travelers to demonstrate that Thai cuisine is not only delicious, but that it is prepared with exemplary standards of hygiene.

All vendors at the festival will prepare food in compliance with the Public Health Ministry’s “Clean Food, Good Taste” project standards.

OrBorJor President Paiboon Upatising said, “One of Phuket’s outstanding attractions is the delicious local food and we wish to promote this aspect of the island to visiting tourists.”

In addition to the mouthwatering array of foods on display, the festival will also include a host of activities such as music, cooking contests in four categories, dances performed by local school students, and even a Miss Phuket Ladyboy contest.

A sure highlight of the festival will be the preparation of what the organizers say will be the world's largest batch of Southern Thailand's famous nam prik kung siap (shrimp chili sauce).

The opening ceremony starts today at 5 pm, after which time work on the colossal bowl of nam prik will begin.

Food sales will start at 3 pm on the final four days of the project. The festival finishes at midnight daily.

Those who enjoy beer are advised to bring their own. Unlike most festivals held at Saphan Hin, there is no brewery sponsorship of this event, an OrBorBor spokeswoman said.
