Yesterday we has a house blessing event.

The monks rolled up around an hour late at about 10.00 a.m.

This was just as well because i had to go get benbaaa from the Tesco in Bor Sang so as he could follow me to my place.

bustak was the only other td member in atendance along with a small bunch of our new neighbours.

i fel out with him the first time we met about a month ago.

he told me to 'fukk off'

yesterday we didn't say anything to each other.

in laws paid for it.

the little envelopes from guests made up for that.

wouldn't have been much anyway but i chose not to ask.

he was speaking gibberish english trying to impress his mates.

i told him i didn't have a clue what he was on about and he told me he was the village head and i said....I didn't care.

i then proceeded to talk to him in Thai causing him to gradually lose his drunken temper and then telling me to "fukk off" at least he got that bit right.

chanting in the bedroom went on for about an hour and a half I think.

We changed 3 things in our house/land last month to influence favourably our karma/luck

1 ) removed stones from the bottom of the well that were used in the house blessing

2 ) repositioned our spirit house near the front entrance

3 ) built another spirit house for the ponds.

All recommended by a fortune teller.

Serious thought... I am surprised so many (all???) farangs (sorry, foreigners) seem to go in for all these blessings and ceremonies. Is it because you want to do it, or just to appease the missus and family?

Not that I have anything against it myself, just never felt bothered to do it.

I remember some people used to take pity on my son because we never bought a a gold or silver bracelet to put on his ankle

Anyway, CMN, it's nice to see that you are making friends and influencing people in your new neighbourhood

We had 7 for our main house and a single one for our two bungalows a couple of years later
As with steps in your entrance stair, it has to be an odd number.

The thing is Nick, when you live in another culture, sometimes it is good to follow a few of the local customs

My builders were really pleased when we had the first post ceremony, they thought it would be good luck for the house and for them working

when I made a couple of offerings at the spirit house, they were very impressed and it gave me some extra respect ("face") etc

Just good PR and it makes things go smoother with the locals; not compulsory but nice (and you get some good pics too)
