Just went to the Thai temple on the outskirts of Philly with my friend and his Thai wife. In the NJ/PA/DE area, you can't walk two feet without running into a Korean/Indian/Chinese person. The South East Asian population, however, is a lot smaller. So the Thai temple becomes the de facto meeting place for all of the Thai, Cambodian, and Laotian people. On the grounds outside the Temple, they have a small market and a free lunch. Loudspeakers were blaring messages from the monks inside, things like welcome to the temple, etc. We couldn't help it, but my friend and I could easily spot the Thais who were highly skilled workers on H1-B visas and the ones that arrived through less traditional channels. Even after living in the States for ten years, it was just something about the way they moved and how they put their makeup on. Of course, it was hard to distinguish the teenagers raised in the US from the bargirls because they dressed in that trashy MTV/Britney Spears style. But who really cares? Everyone was friendly and having a good time recreating Thailand in this distant outpost. The only white guy selling stuff at the market was selling VCDs, some of which were sexy. Leave it to us farangs to do that at the Thai temple.
