Songkran Festival, April 12-15, is the traditional Thai New Year. This is the time for Thais to pay homage to Buddha images, clean their houses, and sprinkle water on their elders in a show of respect. Anyone who ventures out on the streets is likely to get a thorough dousing of water, all in good fun, but also quite welcome at the peak of the hot season.

Songkran is a Thai traditional New Year which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. Songkran festival on April 13 is Maha Songkran Day or the day to mark the end of the old year, April 14 is Wan Nao which is the day after and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok which the New Year begins. At this time, people from the rural areas who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival. Thus, when the time come, Bangkok temporarily turns into a deserted city.

Songkran is known the worldover for its characteristic tradition of water-throwing ranging from a courteous sprinkle or a polite splash, to harmless water pistols and showers from garden hoses to the well-aimed bucket or water cannon.

ll I shall have a few, the mayhem started yesterday and shall continue till the 20th, last night I braved going out as my mate is over from Hong Kong, it wasn't too bad, but it will get worse

my wife just called me from Chiang Mai. She was trying to get from the airport to our house but was stuck in a traffic jam. She had already been trying to get home for over an hour, a journey that usually takes 15 minutes

I braved the kiddies and their machine pistols and went out for food at 1pm...Luckily the food was wrapped double..

The GF went to Khao Sarn Road yesterday, I declined to take part in the annual showering of the great unwashed and instead witnessed a much smaller scaled version at Big Johns.

We were gonna do a pig over an open fire but folks seemed to kinda lose interest after the 30th beer chang/leo was drank. maybe tomorrow I go down and help get the fire goin' so we can have more dead pig and beer.

Just done the round, visiting the old folks, washing their hands with scented green water while mumbling blessings for the coming year (in German). That's what Sonkran is about around here.

Lots of very porkable looking village daughters with 3 Baht gold chains returned from Bkk and Pattaya for the occasion, but I was under close surveillance throughout the event. They're all cashiers at Tesco-Lotus and Carrefour, btw.

Have you noticed how bad most of the little kids are at actually hitting a target; especially a moving one? When I was out on my bicycle the other day I felt so sorry for some of them for their wildly inaccurate attempts that I'd turn around and stop and let them have a close range shot just to boost their ego a bit.

I had a friend dating those "Tesco-Lotus cashiers", she would go as far as going into the "employee" entrance with him to pretend she was one. He found out the hard way.

I went to Pattaya yesterday to buy some throusers (No, I didn't get any). Traffic was terrible, while I'm stuck there I took some pictures also. Here we go.



It's a big Songkran day in Pattaya, we Thai call it "Wan Lai".





It's Sukhumvit Rd., people just didn't care cars which were running on this road much, they just wanted to have fun.

On the way back, I saw many trucks with many people on the back and cars were heading to Pattaya town. Wow.. never seen it before.



So it took me 2 hours to get the mall and 1.5 hrs to go back.
