    Bangsaen Speed Festival

Bangsaen Speed Festival ready for the off
Town closes streets to traffic as it prepares for nation’s first road races

    Ariyawat Nuamsawat

Bangsaen is preparing to close the town to traffic this weekend, ready for Thailand’s first ever road races that will start this coming Sunday, November 11 and continue over a five-day period.

Former Minister of Tourism and Sports Sontaya Khunplome, who is responsible for organizing the races, is predicting that more than 150,000 visitors will crowd into Bangsaen during the week.
Sontaya said that the Bangsaen Thailand Speed Festival would be a historic event for Thailand’s auto racing, and that 3.7km of the town’s roads will be closed to traffic.
The racing festival will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday morning with the first standard roadrace in Thailand. Competitors will battle it out over the 3.7km course that includes straights and fast bends on Upper Kao Sam Muk Road and Bangsaen Beach Road.
The highlight of the competition will be the Super Car and Super 2000 categories, which will see a gathering of Thailand’s best-known racers. For pickup trucks there will be the Super Pick-up Commonrail 2,500cc event. Toyota will be featured in the Toyota One Make Race that will be held with three categories, namely the Yaris One Make Race, the Vios One Make Race and the Vios Lady.
Sontaya said that this type of racing was popular overseas but that Thailand also has the potential to do it. Bangsaen has roads that are suitable for roadracing, and beautiful scenery to form an important backdrop. The races, he said, will be an important step in developing Thailand motor sports to reach international standards.

    Angry Isn't stealing a crime?

    Hi, newbie here,
I found this site because I saw this race today on TV and followed a search here. All I can say is thanks to the Thai organisers for absconding with another one of my original ideas that I presented to them when I first came over here in 2003 and their programs were just floundering. It's so heartening to see them having so much success with my suggestions without even the slightest inkling of credit where credit is due.

That also goes along with the numerous one make series they have had for sometime now and also the formatting of moving the series around the country to venues like old airports, all without a single thank you! Let alone any amount of inclusion..

Hey but it's all good because I won't take any credit for the scary lack of safety (driver, worker and fan) that isn't planned into these events, and after all of that investment, (while it is much better than some other events that have been organised like here in Phuket) this track from a drivers point of view is down right scary to everyone concerned, not to mention going to be expensive in terms of vehicle damage as demonstrated by Kirikiats crash testing of the new arnco today in his BMW-Porsche (referring to his BMW patch on his sleeve while driving a Porsche).

While I would never wish any harm come to a fellow competitor, and I wouldn't be saying this if he was injured, in the end I guess that's Karma since he is one of the organisers to which I am referring.

I wish I could get a visionary and entrepreneurial Expat to help me demonstrate to these little fish how a big fish would organize a series and drive one of these cars by backing a real professional player with talent..

Sorry to disappoint Khun Sontaya but this venue is still far below International standards and the only events it will be hosting and exposure it will be getting is going to be on a local level only and from websites because it will never hold any International level FIA events in it's current layout and safety concerns.

Just a clue here guys: Besides a possible life saver, tire walls aren't just to protect the cars and drivers they also protect the arnco so you don't have to have a 1.5 hour break in the middle of a race repairing them.

The Most entertaining move of the race for me was after the ARTO Toyota and Kirikiats Porsche crashed they threw out a white flag??? What is up with that?? That's why Vuttikorn (spelling?) went blazing past everyone down the front straight at full pace in his Porsche which could have been a real hazard to say the least. Because, he races off shore most times and they use International standards of flagging, he obviously read the white flag to mean what it is intended to, slow vehicle on course pass with caution I.E. tow truck, partially disabled but still moving car, ambulance, etc.., or in some cases it means last lap. It has nothing to do with the safety car on course, a standing double yellow at all stations signifies safety car on course, geezz!!.
