    Koh Kret

Decided to visit Koh Kret which is located in Nonthaburi Province. Basically this is the closest island to Bangkok. However, don't expect any sand as this island is in the middle of the Chao Phraya River.

You take a short 2-3 minute ferry ride from the Sanam Nua pier. Be prepared to pay up to 1-2 baht for the ride.

Koh Kret is home to ethnic Mons whose ancestors set up ‘Kwarn Ar-marn’ (pottery village) on the Island after their capital was attacked by the Burmese. They make a blood-red, Mon-style pottery called ‘Hai’.

This guy is making 100 ashtrays for a customer.

He would throw a lump of clay on the wheel and in less than a couple of minutes would have the rough shape already done.

    Only 93 more to go!

    Clay pottery everywhere.

A look at their massive kiln.

    Luckily, it wasn't fired up.

The island is also know for it's Thai sweets or khanom.

Chickens were everywhere, as you can see by the monk's living room.

Well worth a visit. If you are in BKK the journey to the island should take less than an hour.

BTW, look out for the motorcye taxis on the island. Not because of the fares, but because of the narrow sidewalk!

I went there with Sandra about a month ago to shoot 'filler' scenes for my clients bike ride sequence which was part of the Ko Van Kessle bike tour which sets off from China town.

The scenery was similar and I got some great footage of dogs, potters, a woman washing at the riverside, kids jumping into klongwater.

A nice little respite from the usual Bangkok err.. stuff.

So are you local then Hillbilly?

    Went yesterday.

Charming for a day out and cruise around Ko Kret and khlong Bang Bua tong. Also suitable for a Gentleman Scamp bohemian pied- a-terre of the creative MungTong thani-type.

However, no decent international schools, and a generally hapless 'look where we've ended up' bucolic atmosphere.

Moonshine, pre-cancerous, premature-death, sort of place for farangs.

    Pretty though.

I like this coffee guy and his lil coffee shop is so cool.

This Thai sweet.... ahhhhhh.... (but can't eat much, you will get fat real quick!)

I think Hillbilly showed this already, the sign of Koh Kred though it could not be explained to me why it turns to the side.

We took a boat tour around the island with a few stops, not the least convenient way to see all the important sights though we missed the landscape out which I heard should be nice too.

After a later lunch at some empty restaurant, next stop was the muslim village. This mosque is on the opposite side of the river though.

    A lazy dog.

    Some festivity at the temple

    The pottery

I got a picture of the famous sweets shop too but only with my ugly mug.

I made the visit to Ko Kret 2 years or so ago and enjoyed it tremendously. One can walk around the island on the narrow sidewalks or there are bicycle rentals to enjoy. Good photo opportunities. Good food. Very interesting.

Koh Kred is a good place to take friends who come to visit LOS from OS'
A good way to get there is via the regular river ferries to Nonthaburi then get a minivan from there.
Lots of little food places along the trail, so my recommendation is to nibble a bit from each different place rather than sitting down to a meal.
