Is there really a beach in Pattaya? I guess you are referring to that grey field on the other side of beach road.....

Chintee, Couldn't agree more, people want their cake and eat it too, any pleasure spot any where in the world worth visiting eventually becomes a little overwhelmed at times..

Just as when I grew up and lived in South Florida, my attitude was "great! then, the less that come down here the better" stay home or go somewhere else that just leaves 'paradise' to rest of the us.. Their loss, our gain..

More over I don't know how there is any comparison to the traffic in Pattaya the last time I was there a few years ago the traffic there was far worse than the worst seasonal day here and I didn't have the benefit of the beautiful view to sooth my soul while I was sitting in the traffic or driving at a snails pace..

Sometimes on this island it is a blessing for the traffic to slow you down because then you get the chance to look up and see the surrounding beauty so it isn't all bad.. Even coming down the Patong road you get a beautiful view of the Andaman especially at dusk with the sun out off the water.. Like stopping to smell the roses for example... A real driver loves these roads they are exciting and invigorating...

I agree that tuk tuk and taxi mafia here are terrible but there is a taxi meter company if you can plan ahead and they are better regulated.

They have a small taxi stand off the side when you arrive at the airport so get a business card and use it that is the best way to piss on the mafia and help the true more honest company gain a foot hold..

Just like Bangkok they will charge an airport fee of 100b which is a little higher than the last time I got a taxi from Bangkok, but anywhere else outside of the airport and their rates are comparable.. Still cheaper than taxi mafia which costs 500 baht from the airport to Kathu while the metered taxi is about 350 with the 100b airport fee included..

I had a long talk with one of the drivers once and just so you know it isn't the taxis themselves that charge these prices they are extorted by the mafia so I don't blame them they are victims too..

Renting a car is the way to go I have used the same company for more than a year now and they are quite good, decent cars with a reasonable rate but now I get a discount and some other perks since I have been doing so much business with them..

I absolutely refuse to use the taxis there. Even from the airport - I always go for the minibus. 180 baht gets me to Patong.

Regarding Pattaya, well, yes - the beach there is complete shite. Probably the worst beach I've ever been to. But as far as eating out and going to bars....it is much cheaper than Phuket.
The beaches in Phuket are beautiful and I did enjoy some swimming - but there are just too many fucking people, and all those umbrellas and jetskis ruin the beauty.

    Exclamation Phuket and Beaches

The shop owners and beach hawkers have always taken Tourists for plain idiots and been fleecing them ever since and since the Tsunami it has even gone much worse. I was there last year and was absolutely shoked at the prices charged, not to mention the tuk tuk taxis, they are the scum of Phuket. I think the overpricing is partly due to the TWO WEEK MILLIONAIRS I call them, they come; show rolls of money, tip like grazy; no wonder they think we are all millionairs and have money groing on trees back home. However you do get very friendly Taxi drivers at the Airport but you have to walk about 200 meters as they are not alowed near the terminal, only to drop of. I for one give Phuket a miss.

Phuket's nice if you stay away from Patong beach. Plenty of nice beaches elsewhere on the island, and even if you insist on your farang creature comforts they're easy to come by.

I used to like Surin beach and the ones further north of Patong, and there are lots of little ones that are in not so obvious places.

As everybody else says: rent a car or a bike and fuck the tuk-tuks.

I asked for joking to one of the tuk tuk how much it was to go from Karon to Patong, 400 THB he says, that's a 5km drive, and about 15min, yeah a bit dangerous road, but come on. That's about 800 THB round trip !!!

The stupid tourists would go with it.

Karon to Airport, 800 THB, but it's a long 45 min drive

Rent a car, it's cheaper and better, even with the premium insurance

The limousines from the airport to Patong only charge 650 Baht.
Unfortunately, the guy who runs the tuk-tuks also owns several hotels on the island. The Tavorn in Karon is one of his. He is a member of one of the "Big Five" families, so, nothing is ever going to change with regard to the tuk-tuk situation.

I'll stick to Koh Chang, just 30 minutes or so away from my place . . . until it too turns into a shithole like Patong and Pattaya

Johnny falang loves Patong, its the got the beach and the girls coupled with nice affordable hotels.

The 500-1000 baht joiner fee in some establishments is pushing some noses out of joint, lets see what happens?

For me its gotta be Ao Nang (Krabi) its a nice beach if you want that sort of thing.

I tell you guys, there are more beautiful, and innocent young girls in Phuket than anywhere else in Thailand.

I think the difference is that the Phukhet girls understand the long game. There is not much short time going on here. You find somebody you love, and you stay longtime. That is the game here.

IMHO, the most gorgeous of the lot are the Bangkok office girls and uni students.

But there are real honeys in both Pattaya and Phuket. Probably the average standard is better in Phuket, 'cus quite a few of the girls in the Pattaya beer bars are well past their 'sell by' date. On the other hand, they generally speak a modicum of English and at least you can carry on a conversation with them.

you will find that many good looking girls in Pattaya will go to Phuket after a while because they can maximize their return,

basically, you are paying for long time for what was a short time whore not long ago

Yes, sell by date applies to Pattya and Bangkok girls. Phuket girls are more fresh. However, these girls don't speak any English for you amateurs.

I haven't been to Phuket for 6 years. Sure its a little more expensive than Pattaya but I was impressed with the overall attractions there back then. Beautiful beaches, good restaurants and of course Bangla Road for some entertainment.

Now, some questions for those with more recent knowledge of the place.
I have some friends planning to take a 10 day holiday in Thailand and they asked me where I would recommend. They are a married couple in mid 40s. They want a bit of comfort, so will probably opt for a 4 star hotel. They want to squeeze as much as they can into their short holiday and are not too concerned about paying a little extra. (which I am sure they will :-).

I recommended Bangkok for a couple of days and then a week in Phuket.
They will be travelling in June. And I am not sure how the weather in Phuket is at that time. I imagine it will be hot and rainy, which shouldn't be too much of a problem. But what about the winds? I booked a trip from a Bangkok hotel to Samui some years back and we got stuck in a place on the Western side of the Island. That was in October and the winds were terrible. Couldn't go onto the beach for risk of getting sandblasted to death and the water was dirty, rough and full of frothy foam getting blown up onto the beach. I would hate to think that Phukets beaches were anything like that in the low season during June.

Now on to the entertainment issues. This couple want to experience as much as they can in their 10 days. So in Bangkok they will probably do the floating market and palace tours etc.. They also want to sample the seedy night life, and this came from the female half of the couple. I told them about the sex shows in Pat Pong with the darts, streamers and goldfish etc.. and they insist its a must see on their itinerary. Trouble is, its been years since I have been to Pat Pong and the place was in decline back then. I would hate them to get ripped off on the basis of my advice.
Any suggestions for a good quality sex show venue in Bangkok with lots of "shock" value?

I know they are going to get ripped off with the tuk tuks and taxis but that wont worry them much as they are 2 week tourists and financially reasonably well funded.

Any advice from the more experienced members here would be much appreciated.

Depends a lot on their interests but as a quiet alternative to Phuket, you should check out Khao Lak.
