King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand's sole unifying figure through decades of political upheaval, has been receiving physical rehabilitation in a Bangkok hospital, where he has been treated since Sept. 19 for a fatigue and lung inflammation. Uncertainty about his health sparked a steep fall in stock prices . Markets recovered after the palace said the king's health was improving. The king was "continuing a rehabilitation programme to gain more muscle strength," it said in the first statement from the Royal Household Bureau since Oct. 30. He has made three short appearances in public since being admitted, twice in the grounds of Siriraj hospital and once at the Grand Palace for his birthday ceremony. As the world's longest-reigning monarch, he enjoys reverence rarely witnessed in modern times. The king has reigned through a series of short-lived, fractious governments and military coups since he ascended to the throne in 1946. The subject of his health is sensitive partly because of concerns that his succession may be complicated. Public discussion of the monarchy is limited by strict lese-majeste laws that carry a penalty of up to 15 years in jail. The Bangkok Post newspaper on Saturday published a two-page article and biography of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, with the headline "king in waiting", in a rare reference to him in local media as the king's chosen successor. The king's 57-year-old son does not yet enjoy the popular support his father commands. Thousands of Thais continue to visit the hospital to sign get-well books. Most of the country's 67 million people were born during his 63-year reign. uk.reuters.com
