More to add,…she knows and stays in contact with other Thai’s (from all over the world) and they have been trying to arrange meeting times and places to mourn together (share stories, etc) and they’ve been discussing how to properly handle certain events for the next year.

There was a Lotto draw in the mean time ... the winning numbers were 98 ... which may not, at first glance relate to the late Monarch's passing, but the Thai people were taking all variations.

His birthday, his hospital floor number (16), his age (89), and smart winners reversed his age and got the winning numbers.
Perspective is everything ... it's the difference between going through an ordeal or going through an adventure..

The Thai Consulate travelled out of the Capital City to visit the Temple in my City, which combined with being the first Sunday of the Month, they had a bumper crop to morn.
Next week, there are free busses going to the Capital City Temple for more mourning.

Not saying that Thais in the West are more Royalist ... maybe the King was a uniforming Thai Cultural figure in a land alien to them.

All the photos from that day are in Black and White.

Allmost all Thai Social media is in Black and White.

Even my Thai Stock Brokers website is Black and White ... KT ZMICO Securities, thai stocks online trading

And the Thai Stock Exchange itself The Stock Exchange of Thailand - Companies/Securities in Focus and The Stock Exchange of Thailand: Your Investment Resource for Thailand's Capital Market

I get an impression that much of the sombreness (what little there is) is more to do with keeping up appearances rather than genuine mourning.

Wife handed me an All Blacks tee to go to the market in, but so far has not deigned to don black herself. Never one for frilly gaudyshness, her clothes are muted earth tones, so that will do she says. She has black if she wants, but she hasn't bothered. Same as most of the neighbours. Only the old lady Wat addict.

Seems to be the fashionable trend throughout many online social media circles and blogs - turning everything to a variant of charcoals and greys....

Some really good answers here (and a few idiots) so thanks a lot for that.

Would seem that it is a lot more muted then I was led to believe. Thais are a practical lot most of the time.

Like most catastrophic events this presents a unique business opportunity for black shirt vendors.
Methinks perhaps if someone started selling black paper or plastic orchids ( a la poppies)..never mind that they are made in China...55

Apart from the internationally available scenes of mass media grief in the capital, daily life elsewhere is muted but not visibly any different from other low season inactivity. Most of the local Thai seem to have developed the British 'stiff upper lip' grieving quietly behind closed doors, and putting on a brave face in public.
Externally, the global media will concentrate on the seething masses in Bangkok. I suspect even that is restricted to just a few key sites. What else can they show? Life goes on pretty much as normal? No media mileage in that.
