Travelling from Mae Sai to Rangoon

I`m planning on doing a visa run to Mae Sai,end of January.
Is it possible to travel from Mae Sai to Rangoon overland, either by train or bus?
Can I get a visa to stay in Burma at least 7 days at Mae Sai?
I`ve searched on Teakdoor, but most of the info is old, nothing current.
Any useful info would be very welcome....

    Quick answer - nope.

Have to fly. Can get a days pass on mae sod border to walk around the border town in burma if you wish, but cant leave. Also bear in mind that Burmese time is 30 mins ahead of Thailand, so dont get stranded there when you want to return.

Always have to get a monthly or 15 day one in advance.

I was there April of last year. I wouldnt for a second think that visa rules have changed so this is only from whats in my book.

Myanmar is not the most sensible visa run given the recent history of that country and the restrictions on travel that have been imposed. Laos or Cambodia have to be the easier options.

Give yourself at least an hour to see all that Rangoon has to offer.

A few Bumeses people I know who work in Chiang Rai go home occasionally to Rangoon by air from Tachilek airport by Air Bagan, brave people they are.

Don't know if a farang can now get a visa or not.

A couple of months ago, a Thai friend and I tried to get a visas in Tachilek to fly to Hehe, then overland to Lake Inle but could not do it. All visas have to come from the Burmese embassy in Bangkok.

Also they told us, as david44 wrote above, we would have to have a guide with us the whole time.

Myanmar is not as open as they have claimed.
