In the mountains outside of Taipei (not far) there is a Hot springs area, very picturesque and very Japanese influenced- you could almost be in rural Japan. Well recommended, sorry forget it's name.

Theres a smallish expat nitelife area, not far from the Sherwood downtown, it's been going for years, and good seedy fun. It's called 'the Block' or maybe 'the Square' I believe, or was.

The National Museum is well worth a look- lots of good stuff plundered from the PRC when they did a runner.

Accomodation, I'd say that quirky old maoist/stalinist monstrosity, the Grand. It's not very expensive, & not far from downtown.

Taking some photos and writing a travel thread for TeakDoor is always a good thing to do.

I have stayed there a few times. Its OK, but some times a hassle getting down town.

My last visit there was quite a dissapointment. Previous visits had resulted in some interesting and enjoyable encounters, but the last time, 2 or so years ago - nothing to be found (at least where I was wandering). Not sure if it was just bad luck, the scene had moved, or my aging....

Yes, the National Palace Museum is good. They have more artifacts there than in the Beijing museum. There are 600,000 pieces stored in air-conditioned vaults inside the mountain, and only 100,000 can be displayed at any one time, so they rotate them.
The Chinese army moved them away from central areas when the Japanese invaded China, then many were spirited away to Taiwan by the Nationalist forces under Chiang Kai Shek.
If you have been living in a city and havent been to any mountainous areas for a while, you can take a bus a fair way up Yangminshan (mountain) behind Taipei. There's parkland you can walk around.
Getting around Taipei is easy these days with the MRT...
