    Help with Street address

I may be flogging a dead horse but I have two potential leads to find where this house is.
The first address I have is javastraat no.6 , which I take to mean 6 Java street. This adress dates to 1929.

The other address is Tasmanstraat No 10 which I take to be 10 Tasman street.
There is no suburb, only Surabaya. It wouldn't have been that big in those days so I assume it's faily central.
It's where my father spent his boyhood. here's a pic of him and his mum and dad (Oma and Opa).
Google earth can't find either, I jus wondered if anyone had any local knowledge.

    Thanks.

Hmm, I assumed it was, you may be right. Maybe more research is required.

City of Surabaya in Indonesia. Or could be the area of Surabaya. Its going to be difficult to trace, Dutch Street names in the Far East not impossible but difficult. The length of time eighty years plus has its own problem ie buildings knocked down street names changed from Dutch to local langauge.
Best of luck to you in your quest..

There's a few references for Jalan Jawa, Surabaya...

jalan jawa surabaya - Google Maps

Pretty sure you won't find anything for Tasman. Last big purge of English/Euro names was '98

Yep, no street view available in Indo but looking at the roof tops none of the houses in a position to be No.6 have the same roofline as the house in your picture so I reckon it is gone now.

I think so. That photo must have been taken mid to late 30s and it was oldish then.
Does look to be a school or something there.

the thing about street names in Indonesia is that they often change with appalling regularity

I had a map showing several streets with at least three names

    Hi Koojo,

I saw your message about the Javastraat in Surabaya.

From his baby book I know that my grandfather grew up in Javastraat 29 in the early 20th century. Later his family moved to the Netherlands, where I am from!

In March, I'll be going to Indonesia for the first time and I'd love to visit the Javastraat in Surabaya.

Did you manage to find out where the Javastraat is? Is it the same as the current Jalan Jawa on Google Maps?

Thank you very much for your help!

    Wouter

    Jalan = Street

I would say that that would be correct.

Hi Wouter, I never found out anymore about the address, I wonder if our Families knew each other. My guess is they did.
The link to the photo seems to be broken.

Surabaya is covered by Google street view now so it shouldn't be difficult to find.

Here's a picture of 6 Java Street (6 jalan java). It's near the river.

I've done a lot of touching up, but I'm astounded at the resolution considering the original is a wallet size.
They seemed to have been into photography. I have many good photos dating back to the 19th century.

In this photo, there are some reflections in the glass. Is one of the reflections of the person taking the photograph?

They had some good old cameras back then...And black and white pictures only...

I wonder when the coloured pictures first arrived...

I'm guessing yes, the way he's looking down as if into the camera.

Could the house have been destroyed in the battle of Java? The house on Street map seems to be a 60/70's type construction.

    Love your grandads suit
