Stayed at cPanelŽ.tunehotels.com/ last week for MYR 72.00/THB710 ( inc towel and air con as add ons).

Found air con not really needed as had ceiling fan but for the price of the add on may as well take it.

They have clearly copied the cheap airline (Air Asia/EasyJet) concept with the branding and although could not fault the place it felt like a bit of a 'vacuum'.

Also, do not think they are really that cheap compared to the competition as the room was a bit of a shoe box and not even a TV. Basically ok if you only intend to just sleep there which was fine for me as it was my first trip to Penang and there for 1 day so was busy having a nosey around.

However, just put a random date in the booking system for 15 Nov and notice price with same add ons for double room (not sure why this shows cheaper than a single!) is MYR46.00/THB450 so looks like they operate an early booking system to get cheaper rooms although no good for me as never know what doing one day to the next.

The other one which I was going to try but seemed to be fully booked according to the website was cPanelŽ.hotelcontinental.com.my/ They seem to be charging MYR108.00/THB1,060 for cheapest room until 20 November. This includes TV/Broadband/Brekkie which are all add ons at Tune Hotel which i did not take.

Continental is better located as within the bar/restaurant area although it looked like anywhere downtown was walkable and the Tune is only a 10 min walk to Continental.

If on a budget Tune looks to be a better deal if book some time in advance at cheaper rates but if I was offered the rate I paid at Tune for a late booking (THB710) and that presently on offer at Continental (THB1,060) I would probably go for the latter for the small price difference. The TV/Broadband/Brekkie included would probably make up the difference anyway). However cannot comment on Continenatl as not stayed there just looked at the piccies on their website.

Both these hotels I saw mentioned on forums.

Did not seem to be too much to look at in Penang but I was only there for the visa trip and the curry. I went to Kashmir restaurant mentioned on forums which is a basement curry house in the bar/restaurant area and had a great meal (real Brit curry taste). The owner was a very nice guy and as I was by myself he tried to interact to make me comfortable/welcome and I basically went with his suggestions (probably what they needed to get rid of in the kitchen).

I think I had Tandoori Chicken Leg and Popadum/Pakora with dips to start, Mutton Curry, Saffron Rice and Garlic Nan. Including 2 bottles of the local brew (Ankor?) it came to MYR95.57/THB941.36. Just realised that is not far off 20 quid at current crap exchange rates but worth it for the curry fix and that did include 2 beers which are not cheap over there.

I am sure the Indian food from the local casual canteen style places is a lot cheaper and just as good but this time was happy to go a la carte.

Also went to Soho pub, your typical Brit style pub abroad and the Kikenny was RMY22.50/THB220 per pint (including all the ++ surcharges which don't recall seeing on the menu list).

May go back next month for the curry

Lots of upgrades, I paid less when I went in 2008 as well. Still like it though. If you have stayed before they knock off about 25%.
