Hi,
Does anyone have any recommendations on decent and clean guesthouses in Kanchanaburi? Also, what is a must-do in Kanchanaburi?
We were going to ride the railway, go to the falls, and ride a bamboo raft. Is 2 days enough in Kan?
Cheers

Why do you recommend this one, Thetim? Have you stayed there? Thanks

We use this place all the time for clients who want to stay in Kanchanaburi.
It right in the midst of the guest house area. It fronts on the road and at the back is the river.
Khun Noi is the boss there and one of the nicest Thai people I have ever met.
They have a host of things you can do while you are there so you might be stretching it with 2 days. Whatever, have fun up there.
Thanks very much, klongmaster! The place look really lovely. Nice to see a pool as well.
I just noticed there are no room rates on the site, klong. Do you know the price for rooms?
Stayed at the Pong Penh Guesthouse last spring. Good, clean and comfortable. Swimming pool and a terrace overlooking an offshoot of the river. You may need a day or two longer to do all you wish. Some very accomodating bars there for the lonely male traveller
^Thanks, KWAN. I'm female, and I won't be to lonely, but thanks for the tip.

Rooms are 700 to 1200....the higher being for family and kids I think.
I like poisoning my neighbours dogs till they die cos I'm a cnut
Thanks Klong and Nawty.
I love that region. You really do need your own wheels to fully explore all the great national parks out there. Tons and tons of great camping spots and you might be the only ones there.
Kanchan. has a few things to do such as the museum but head out of town north towards the death railway museum and take a walk down to see the actual track and cuttings; a somber but eye opening experience and I got to say those ozzies built quite a nice memorial there.
If you have time continue on north to Sai Yoke NP and see the waterfalls. You can find some accommodation here. From there the road gets smaller and smaller but there is some spectacular scenery along the way and lots of parks and waterfalls and caves to stop at. There is a beautiful lake and lots of camping near Sankhla Buri. The NP is called Khao Laem. Follow the road around the lake to the right and there will be lots of camp grounds with tents or cabins for rent.
Sankhla Buri and 3 pagoda pas are not that special but again there are more waterfalls and caves along the way.
I spent 1.5 weeks there last time. It has to be one of my favorite places in Thailand. It's actually one of the places where you can actually feel alone. Not a whole lot of people out that way.
^Sounds great. It is a place that I've wanted to check out for many years, but never got around to it.
I'm meeting up with a few friends there, and will probably only spend a few days there. It isn't much time, but we'd like to check out the museum. Which one do you recommend? I heard there are a few.
We also want to see the seven tiered waterfalls, and swim in them. Do a bamboo raft ride. I read the book, 'Bridge over the River Kwai,' and I'm really excited to actually see it. Is it possible to ride the train near there. I have heard that it is possible.
Cheers
I have always stayed at The Jolly Frog. Not flash, but clean adequate rooms. If there are a few of you, you could ask for the multi person room which almost overhangs the river and has a lovely verandah right on the water.
Thanks Lily. Are you Jellybean from Ajarn as well?
The original "wooden bridge" was destroyed long ago. There now is a steel one over the river but at a different location than the original. It's really is too crowded and not very impressive. You can take a ride on an old train there too.
The Death Railway museum is an hour or 2 out of town but well worth a visit. You can take a nice trail down to the actual Hellfire Pass. Lots of good information in the museum also.
I visit Kanchanaburi every year for the ANZAC Day ceremonies with a few ex Navy mates and we always stay at Phong Phen guest house. Nice place, nice people, good rates and Excellent food

go to Sangkhlaburi, it's the end of the road on the burmese border, still in Kan province, though. Ride a motorcylce for a real experience
Cheers for the info, mobs, lesdunbar, and staggerlee.
