For me Thailand is a great place to spend a few weeks or months per year, during November to February only, but definitely not to live and work in full time. The rest of the year there are better places in the world to be, both climatically and to keep plenty of variety in life.
If I had to live full time in Asia it would be in Taiwan. It has cooler weather than Thailand, but still year round ample warmth and sunshine in the south of the island (and if you get bored of the sun you can quickly take a bullet train to the cloudier wetter north), has far better facilities and infrastructure for not much higher prices, cuter more educated women, less crime and poverty, and an easier visa systems that allow 90 day visa-free visits and foreigners who marry a local to own a house and do any job.
Otherwise it's Europe for me, either the UK during its warm months or Portugal for more sunshine, lower prices, free healthcare, the ability to live and work visa and permit free, and the ability to pop back to see loved ones any time quickly and cheaply.
California is nice too.
I'm the type of person who prefers being served by her on that Taiwanese train to some fat toothless hawker selling sticky rice on a slow rattling museum piece of a Thai train.

I might head back to glorious England, at least for a few years.
1) living costs will be a nightmare.
2) no visa issues...
3) healthcare is ok, probably no better than Thailand or Korea.
4) I have a woman. But, I have had some beautiful English gfs in the past; they do exist... :)
You have a woman BUT would she come with you to England? Thai women do not adjust easily in many ways.
Mexico
Panama, Belize, Mexico, Venezuela, Honduras, in that order.
I speak much more Spanish than Thai, otherwise all have low cost of living and is closer to the US where I can use Medicare.
If you are rich who gives a flying......................
Where we live is dictated by where I can make a living, which means some shit hole big city, working ever hour god sends just to keep above water.
Thailand's far from perfect, but a hell of a lot better then my other option, at this time.
I am sitting here sipping a vodka, will get out of bed tomorrow when I want, not when my boss wants.
If money was of no concern different story.
Cambodia

Hard world out there, better to be in Thailand with a home and food to eat, then London on the street.
Anyone got a job with housing I'm interested, like travel, just don't see them anywhere. Jim
Some will see most everything black and white, without allowing the variety of alternatives.
Likewise, i have a lot more spanish than my non-existent thai. Mexico would be a great place if not for all the corruption. I spent a few days in Tijuana last year and it's a tragedy of monumental proportions. Not just blocks of derelict buildings, but entire neighborhoods of derelict buildings. It should be the most prosperous place on earth, with a good dollar exchange rate, nice weather, cheap healthcare and just a tram ride from San Diego. If it wasn't for the narco trade scaring people away, americans would be retiring there in droves and everyone there would have a job.
Taiwan might be an option...now where did i put that lotto ticket???
Equador, possibly Uruguay.
Contributors must have been researching the articles on places to retire eg Sth America, Asia, Spain, Portugal.
I have done same.
At this point, my arse is staying in LOS.
It may not be perfect but it ain't bad.
My biggest difficulty is language. The dialect is so difficult eg compare Thai language in BKK/Pattaya to NE Thailand.
One you are of retirement age & you have the $$$, the visa journey is easy.
^ I'd say most contributors here aren't retired, and have probably visited the places you list - it's not difficult to. I'm not retired, but neither do I or would I want to work year-round and be tied down somewhere. Life is too short for that.
If you wanted the thread to be retirement-specific, you should have said.
There are no specfiics in this thread & I have not been to any of the said places.
Quite often the best places to retire are the best places to work too.
Toss up between staying here or Iceland. Must give it more thought.
