They settle, kind of, but not really... most I've seen spend all their time gathering like plump hags to binge on cheap booze and babble just as they would in Patters... spending too much on Thai ingredients, and never really progressing in their English. Flying back lots, to get a homesickness fix and brag about their life abroad. Not many develop themselves or a real understanding of how their chosen country works, and it seems to be a process of saving up to eventually return (in every sense) whence they came.
It's not really settling... it's just like agglomerations of falang who hang about in the same dreary bars, eating egg and chips every day, and having the same dreary conversations.
Settling to me means integrating and not just enduring a place whilst clinging on to comforts and reminders of where you came from. How many genuinely build meaningful and lasting relationships (friendships) with local people when they come? (the question is directed to both the dreary falang and the thai tarts). :D
[QUOTE=buriramboy;
This bollox I keep reading about Thai women not adjusting to living in the West, has anyone actually got any experience of it or is it just something that was said once upon a time, repeated endlessly and became fact??? I know a fair amount of Thais from all different walks of life in the UK and I've yet to come across one in the UK who has failed to adjust/settle.
Yes, my wife joined me in Germany. Worked in Thai massage salon, spoke and ate Isaan 6 days a week and got on great with my family. Said she was really happy. After 9 months she suddenly stopped eating and went from 55 to 34 kilos. Had to return to LOS to save her life. She's now 55 kilos again and in good health. Insists that she really liked it in Germany.
She was 43 when she left. Too old to adjust, I guess.
^ Unless she arrived in spring and was happy until winter arrived. It might have been seasonal affective disorder, not a society and culture thing.
Thank you, Dr runner.
No interest to you, teeruk.
I know of 2 Thai lady's living locally (uk)
1st, married 2 children, husband English works for local council. She hasn't been back since settling down and said she never will. Sometimes phones.
2nd. had a real hard time getting in was held for a very long time, learn't English, eventually earnt the right to stay ( wouldn't happen these days ).
settled down husband white collar job doing well. Two daughters. Started her own business ( Thai food shop ) doing well. Goes back sometimes.
I agree with BB all the Thai / English partnerships I know in the UK are well settled in
Infact all the Thais work , some of them have many jobs to , and again its only the ones I know , but there is none of them in ANY hurry to go back to Thailand to live .
After a while ( if ) they manage to settle in they know in the long run where they are well off and most enjoy the lifestyle .
My missus loves it here and loves the lifestyle she now has , Thailand is for visits for us now .
I hope we are going to retire into Europe soon in a warmer climate
Obviously when I pop me clogs she will go back home , but she has a nice little place to go back to I have made sure of that and she will be financially without any worries
No wonder the unhappy ones can't be found. They've all gone home. :)
You must all inhabit a particular similar demographic.
I've seen or met plenty of Thai women in the UK who were or are unhappy. I also have met or know those who are working and doing OK, and are content with their lot. Some who want to go back eventually; some who don't except to visit family and maybe a few friends.
I can think of one I know who's definitely fed up of the UK and wants to leave her old codger and go back to her little house near the sea. She's not the only one I've met. I've seen a number of unhappy marriages, where the woman is miserable, lonely and desperate for some attention or homesick. The life here is miserable and dull for them.
Life in the UK is oppressively expensive, bureaucratic, stressful, and not much fun, even when the sun is out. Yet we know that Thailand is a corrupt shithole full of sharks and disasters around every corner. You make the best of either. Try and keep the balance sheet on a healthy trajectory.
I'm pretty much good living anywhere just as long as it's not Portsmouth, Portsmouth is the arsehole of the mankind and only files are happy in Portsmouth.
Thankfully I don't live in Portsmouth. It is indeed a shithole.
Did you mean "flies"?
Oi!
Southsea's alroit' Now Scumhampton, think Fawley and it's summed up
^You escaped from Netley then? :)
555..bit late for this old retired fart now :
Sometimes think that I should have sailed to some Pacific or Indian Ocean island and often wonder what life would have now been like.
Got mad when I read that Papillon abandoned his two native wives and kids on an island paradise to try to get back and take his revenge in Paris.
Now content in Thailand...Not Isaan,Trang ... have a good life..House farm…Only expense being food, a bit of diesel and the electric bill (well maybe a few gallon of booze)...Easy to live on 20-30k a month without government intervention.
It is always warm and I no longer require night life or fancy restaurants...Always a few thousand baht available for some R&R in a nice resort, visits to friends etc etc.by the beach someplace. Hate leaving for whatever reason… wheels touch the tarmac...I am home to my wife...Love it!
Hopefully you're just taking the piss ...
I know a lot and most of them don't even drink. Many haven't been back to Thailand in years or decades. They work and make good money. Earn pensions and social security benefits. Most all of them became US citizens.
My experience is the farang husband usually has decided to live in Thailand so they never take the wife to the states or even give them a sniff of what it's like to live outside of Thailand for fear they won't want to leave their new country.
Nice to see your happy and settled there Crepitas
Long may your good health + happiness continue
Sort of reminds me of my now ex Canadian BIL.
About 15 years ago he had a great wad of Northern Telecom shares (about $˝ mil) He was all set to cash in and move to Belize, at that time extremely attractive.
Left it too late NT shares bottomed out from 80+ bucks to about 2 and then they shut up shop.Poor bugger lost everything. Now he now owns a house in Burnaby BC under the LRT el train tracks renting out his basement...Shit happens I guess!?
