road to bangkok in may 2007

i am thinking of making an adventure and a road trip in my volvo 240se from kuala lumpur to bankok and maybe even to chiangmai. can teakdoor members, tell me what pit stops to make to make this trip memorable, fun and adrenaline-filled. i am game for anything and will be stopping at windy beaches for kitesurf and also promote my guesthouse (beach bungalow) in kuantan (east coast of malaysia).

please also include any safety concerns if any.
thanks - teakdoor!

I have driven Phrae to Penang a few times.
It is very easy I never had any problems but I avoid Bangers.

As Klongy said the car should be in your name or you will need written permission from the owner.

what about driving in the south ? no risk of getting shot ? how far from Bangkok to Penang ? I might do it. I was just wondering about the security issue of the South with the drive by shooting.

thanks for advice so far...

yes, i own the car and will be getting the necessary insurance for the car. as it is an old volvo but in great condition, just in case - i would need some contacts in haadyai and bangkok for mechanics.
any pitfalls and dangers would greatly make up the adrenaline factor of the journey. let me know more of the 'must visit' and 'must do' stuff as i want this road trip to be memorable!

If you cross at Sadao or Padang Besar you miss out the three southern most provinces where all the bad trouble is.
Just to be safe I would cross in the morning stick to the main highway and put as much distance between me and the border before stopping to eat.
