Deadly explosions hit Yala, kill 3, injure 20

    October 25, 2011 11:40 am

Three people have been killed and about 20 injured, three of whom in critical condition, from a series of bomb blasts that rocked the city of Yala Tuesday evening on the seventh anniversary of the Tak Bai massacre.

Two of the dead were suspected insurgents, both residents of Pattani’s Yarang district, who died from a blast that went off prematurely. The two were transporting the bomb through the Old Market section of Yala’s Muang district and appeared to be heading towards the commercial centre of the city.

BANGKOK, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Bombs exploded Tuesday night in at least seven different places in Yala town, the central district of south Thailand's Yala Province, media reported.

Bombs started to explode one after another at 6:40 p.m. One of the bombs went off near Yala Park View hotel on Ruam Mit road in downtown Yala, Bangkok Post reported.

The explosions also destroyed many houses, shops and vehicles, putting the whole of Yala town was in the state of chaos, it said.

At least one people was believed to have been killed and more than 30 wounded, the English newspaper quoted a TV report as saying.

The explosions followed a series of attacks on Monday in the main town of Narathiwat province, south Thailand, which left at least seven people dead, including two soldiers.

In Monday's attacks, two rangers were shot at a checkpoint by a group of gunmen dressed as women. Then two nearby supermarkets were bombed, killing five civilians.

More than 4,800 people have died in a conflict in southern Thailand during recent eight years. Last month, more than a dozen suspected insurgents attacked a school in Narathiwat, killing four soldiers and seriously wounding one child.

PM says Post report ‘awful’ – Bangkok Post, October 31, 2004

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday slammed the Bangkok Post for damaging international confidence in Thailand’s democratic system with its report that southern Muslim religious and community leaders will ask for a royally-appointed government from His Majesty the King to replace his administration…

Nationalism & Right-wing Politics – 2004 [There are several mentions of the Tak Bai incident on this page. While pro-Thaksin groups have been successful in associating Thaksin with liberal democracy, in his heyday, Thaksin embraced right-wing nationalism to temper the media, suppress criticism of the Tak Bai incident, and sanction hard-line action against separatism in the Thai deep south. Like most of his initiatives during the Thai Rak Thai years, it was generally popular with the public.]

The outrage of Tak Bai – Bangkok Post, October 25, 2010

[Unlike other embarrassments to Thailand, the anniversary of the Tak Bai tragedy is not likely to trumpeted on Thaksin's website.]

…The members of the Thaksin government and the army have strongly defended the actions against the demonstrators, and have rejected all claims of malfeasance or even errors during the violence or in transporting the prisoners. Under the military junta which ousted Thaksin, then-prime minister Surayud Chulanont travelled to Pattani and issued an apology. “What happened in the past was mostly the fault of the state,” he said. He announced several procedural changes in administration. Reparations were made to some families of the dead, and the government dropped the laughable charges of instigating the riot against 92 people who survived the violence…

    Deadly explosions hit Southern Thailand

    AFP – 4 hrs ago

Thai hospital workers shift a man on a stretcher who was injured in a blast in Yala, in Thailand's restive south. A series of explosives planted by suspected Muslim rebels ripped through the town, killing at least one civilian and wounding dozens more

A series of explosives planted by suspected Muslim rebels ripped through a town in Thailand's troubled south on Tuesday, killing at least one civilian and wounding dozens more.

Officials said 15 blasts were heard across Yala and caused chaos in the town, marking the seventh anniversary of a protest in the insurgency-plagued region that left 85 anti-government demonstrators dead.

At least one civilian was killed and two rebels died when their explosives were prematurely detonated on Tuesday evening, according to governor Krisada Boonrach.

An AFP photographer at a local hospital said more than 50 wounded people, some in a serious condition, had arrived for medical treatment after the blasts, which caused a power blackout across the city.

The violence was latest in a series of increasingly brazen attacks by shadowy rebels in the Muslim-majority Thai south, which has been plagued by more than eight years of conflict claiming more than 4,800 lives.

Tuesday's blasts, initially thought to be caused by a mixture of motorcycle and remote-controlled bombs, came on the anniversary one the region's deadliest incidents on October 25, 2004.

Seven people were shot dead as security forces broke up a protest in the town of Tak Bai, and 78 more suffocated or were crushed to death in trucks while being transported to a detention centre.

Rights groups have said the failure of Thai authorities to hold security forces to account over the deaths has fuelled further violence and alienation in the southern region bordering Malaysia.

The insurgents are not thought to be part of a global jihad movement but are instead rebelling against a long history of perceived discrimination against ethnic Malay Muslims by governments in the Buddhist-majority nation.

Deep South Watch, which closely monitors the conflict, said earlier this year that more than half of the victims are Muslims, many apparently targeted because they are seen as traitors for cooperating with the local authorities.

On Sunday at least seven people were killed in back-to-back shooting and bomb attacks in a town in Narathiwat province, neighbouring Yala.

Late last month, more than a dozen suspected insurgents attacked a school in Narathiwat, killing four soldiers and seriously wounding one child.

Teachers working in state schools are frequently targeted because they are seen as a symbol of government authority and an education system perceived as an effort by Bangkok to impose Buddhist culture.

Bombings in Thai south kill 3, wound dozens

    AP – 1 hr 12 mins ago

PATTANI, Thailand (AP) — Thailand's military said more than a dozen coordinated bomb attacks in the country's insurgency-plagued south Tuesday killed at least three people and injured dozens.

The military's Internal Security Operations Command said suspected Muslim insurgents put bombs at 16 locations across the southern town of Yala, including a school, shops and hotels. Authorities defused five of the bombs.

The agency said three people were killed, 14 severely injured and 31 slightly injured. The explosions also caused power outages.

More than 4,700 people have been killed in Thailand's southernmost Muslim-dominated provinces since an Islamic insurgency flared in 2004.

Tuesday's attacks occurred on the anniversary of the 2004 suppression of an anti-government protest in Tak Bai in neighboring Narathiwat province. Seven demonstrators were fatally shot and 78 others died of asphyxiation after being piled on top of one another on military trucks to be taken to a detention center.

Internal Security Operations Command deputy director Akra Tiproj said one of the dead was believed to be a bomber because his body was found on a motorcycle that exploded. Planting bombs on motorcycles is a common tactic of the insurgents.

I wonder how many Takki supporters clicked on the link to this forum, SD ? Zero, perhaps ? Maybe they don't want to be reminded of what their hero is capable of.

Not sure I understand why the revenge attacks take place the south.

in The IRA won because they attacked mainland targets, not least of all Canary Wharf, causing the UK security services to invest huge sums protecting the capital with its "ring of steel". Noone in Westminster really gave a flying fcuk about a few pubs in Belfast.

I'm not sure the government in Bangkok is too bothered about a few street vendors in Yala either.

What's much more shameful is that the last government didn't do a thing to address the problems caused by the army in the south under Thaksin.

You'd have thought that 3 years would be sufficient time to at least look into one incident, but no, for some reason nothing happened.

No Thai government ever had had the balls to address the problems caused by the army. I doubt that you, or most of us, would have the balls to address any problem if the result of addressing that problem was weeks of torture followed by the deaths of all your family members and being burned alive or thrown out of a helicopter over the gulf of Thailand.

    Although I have to wonder why you care considering this;

I'd be quick to challenge the conditioned notion of contributing members that find themselves towards a deeper association with the likes of old Thaksin. Even those who engage in a traditional Red following....

Bob, there's a bit of a difference between the Thaksin government, the Abisit government and the Gaddafi government.

And you might have noticed that in that thread I did write somewhat exageratedly.

Militants die transporting bomb during Yala attacks

60 rebels involved in coordinated blastsTwo of the three men who died in a series of coordinated bomb attacks in central Yala on Tuesday were suspected Islamic militants, the military says.

Fire at a Narathiwat supermarket triggered by bombs on Sunday night. (AFP Photo)

They are thought to have set off the bomb which killed them by accident.

Maj Gen Akara Tiproj, deputy director of Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) Region 4, which oversees security in the lower South, said an investigation found that 21 bombs were planted in different locations in Muang Yala municipality, with 16 devices going off between 6.30pm and 9pm.

The first bomb went off on Soi Sri Putra (Yala's old market), killing Humdee Morsu, 23, and Sakareeya Sanoryarnya, 21, from Pattani's Yarang district. The two were transporting the device by motorcycle.

The bomb is thought to gone off by accident after they hit a speed hump, killing them instantly.

The last batch of bombs exploded continuously within one to 10 minutes of each other.

The final blast destroyed a power pole at Ban Prama village in tambon Sateng Nok, causing a blackout in the area for 10 minutes.

Bomb experts were able to defuse five of the 21 bombs.Security officials believe the attack was the work of insurgents looking to mark the seventh anniversary of the Tak Bai tragedy on Oct 25, 2004, which resulted in 85 deaths.

About 60 rebels are thought to have been involved in the explosions.

A suspected insurgent identified as Riswarn Lae-ha, who lives near the old market area, is alleged to have coordinated the bomb blasts.

Maj Gen Akara said the militants used small anti-personnel devices hooked up to timers. Some were hidden in soft drink and insect repellant cans.

The third victim was identified as Settawut Thongjeen, 17.

Witnesses said he was eating at a food shop when a bomb hidden in a motorcycle that was parked in front of the shop exploded.

Settawut succumbed to his wounds and died in the Yala Central Hospital.

Forty four people were wounded, 13 of whom are in critical condition. They are being treated at the same hospital.

Isoc believes separatist groups are trying to launch a fresh round of violence as the government attempts to restore order in the South after many suspected insurgents surrendered to authorities in the past few months.

This has enabled officials to hinder terrorist attacks and acquire information on the whereabouts of several key rebels operating in the three southern border provinces, which has led to their arrest.

An investigation is under way to identify those involved in the Yala bombings on Tuesday.

This can only be the work of the PAD yellow nutter terrorists and their unelected patrons.

Anything from them loonies to try and deflect attention from the great job that Yingluk is doing as the elected Prime minister, and the warm accolades she is getting from the US administration.

As the patrol was passing the spot on a vehicle the bomb was detonated with a remote control.

The explosion wounded five soldiers, one seriously.
