AP News: Thai police arrest 2 for smuggling dogs to Vietnam

Thai police arrest 2 for smuggling dogs to Vietnam

    Published: 50 minutes ago

BANGKOK (AP) - Thai authorities have arrested two men who tried to smuggle 120 dogs to Vietnam to be sold for human consumption, police said Tuesday.

Acting on a tip, local officials and police officers stopped two pickup trucks carrying the dogs stuffed into bags in Nakhon Phanom province in northern Thailand near Laos, police Lt. Col. Detchai Wannapruek said.

He said police arrested the two drivers, a 24-year-old Thai and 23-year-old Vietnamese, and they confessed. They face charges of illegally transporting animals, unlicensed trade of animals and cruelty to animals.
They could also be charged with transporting unvaccinated animals.

"They were hired to drive the vehicles to the border, where the dogs would be sent off to Vietnam," Detchai said.

Police said 31 of the dogs were dead and the remaining 89 will be taken to a center that cares for rescued dogs in Nakhon Phanom, 370 miles (600 kilometers) northeast of Bangkok.

In mid-August, about 1,800 dogs were rescued from smugglers in Nakhon Phanom, police said.

Their rescue made national news and after learning of their sad state Thais donated more than 20 million baht ($667,000) to help the animals.

Thai media reported on Tuesday, however, that as many as half of those dogs had died at the center because they arrived in such poor health.

Dog meat is a delicacy in Vietnam and is served at restaurants in some parts of the country's north.

Anyone who has an animal as their best friend needs to have a word with themselves. Get out and meet people, take a chance, talk to a woman or something, but above all stop anthropomorphising animals for fucks sake.

Thailand: Dogs escape the butcher but hundreds die in shelter

Dogs escape the butcher but hundreds die in shelter | Bangkok Post: news

Dogs escape the butcher but hundreds die in shelter

More than 700 dogs, rescued from being smuggled out of Thailand for butchering, have died as thousands of others struggle to survive in overcrowded shelters in Buri Ram and Nakhon Phanom.

The matter came to light after the latest seizure of about 550 dogs from a dog smuggling gang in Mukdahan's Wan Yai and Muang districts on Saturday. The dogs were being moved from a house near the Mekong River to the pier.

Authorities originally planned to move the seized dogs to animal quarantine offices in Buri Ram and Nakhon Phanom, but officials there said they could not receive the dogs due to congested conditions at the shelters.

The Livestock Development Department has decided to transport them to the animal quarantine in Ubon Ratchathani's Khemarat district.

Buri Ram animal quarantine head Phaisan Phatthanadechakun yesterday said the shelter had been taking care of about 1,100 seized dogs. He said receiving more dogs would only worsen the overcrowding.

At least 700 seized dogs transferred to his animal quarantine unit had died since last August, he said.

He insisted the authorities had tried their best to take care of the dogs, which were vaccinated and provided with good-quality food. However, some give up eating and continued to die, probably due to the hot weather, he said.

Now, at least one dead dog has to be taken out of Buri Ram animal quarantine every day, Mr Phaisan said.

Some died of illness and starvation as they cannot eat dry pet food.

Quarantine staff are now feeding the remaining dogs rice mixed with chicken ribs in a bid to bolster their appetites, Mr Phaisan said.

Though the shelter is considered too small to take care of its large number of dogs, officials have tried to make it comfortable for them by installing fans and providing them with water basins "to keep them relaxed", he said.

Only 100 of them have been adopted by people so far.

The Nakhon Phanom livestock office also refused to accept the dogs confiscated in Saturday's crackdown as its animal quarantine facility was already extremely crowded.

Despite its maximum capacity of 800, the quarantine centre was now taking care of 1,160 dogs seized from previous crackdowns, Nakhon Phanom livestock office chief Phairach Prathumsuwan said.

With such a high population, the shelter was facing problems meeting the rising costs of caring for the animals.

Meanwhile, Muen Jongboriboon, an official at an animal quarantine in Ubon Ratchathani's Khemarat district, yesterday reported that about 60 dogs seized in Mukdahan and transported to the shelter on Saturday had died.

Some dogs were seriously ill and had been treated in special quarters, he said.

Mr Muen asked people to donate food or money to the office as they did not have the funds to take care of the dogs. Donations can be made through the Livestock Development Department's Bank of Ayudhya account number 0441-092-282.

This dog fiasco is pathetic, transport the mutts to cambodia, vietnam, sell them all for food and stop wasting money on them and feed the people of Thailand, if people can not be bothered in taking care of so called pets, doctor all the fekking things.

mid-late last year - what happened to all the dogs 'saved' then?

Over 2200 I think was the number, rescued just before heading off via Laos (or Cambodia?)

By the time they are picked up at the border, no fate other than a slower death in custody.

I live and sleep with my 2 adopted street dogs but have to agree with you; the most merciful thing that could be done for some of worst off of these animals is to bring in a Veterinarian to mercifully, lovingly an quickly euthanize them.

    Humanely?

Whats so ironic about this, it gets full media coverage, does the average Thai give a damn about the dogs ?, i would suggest the majority could'nt give a toss.

So where and why is the Save the Dog campaign coming from.

Nakhon Phanom: 700 dogs rescued from smugglers

700 dogs rescued from smugglers - The Nation

    700 dogs rescued from smugglers

The Nation on Sunday July 29, 2012 1:00 am

Authorities transferred 700 dogs to Nakhon Phanom Animal Quarantine Centre yesterday that were believed destined for dining tables in Vietnam following the arrest of a Thai truckdriver in Ban Phaeng district on Friday night.

Driver Salud Khottakok was transporting the dogs from Sakhon Nakhon to the border in a six-wheel truck when he was stopped. He confessed to being hired by a Vietnamese investor to deliver the dogs to Ban Phaeng Pier, from where they were to be taken down the Mekong River to Vietnam.

Centre head Chusak Pongpanich said the latest batch took the centre's dog population to about 2,000. The shelter has Bt8 million in donated funds left, but it spends Bt30,000-40,000 a day to care for the dogs. Chusak urged people to donate more money, food and medicine.

Illegal transnational dog trader caught in Nakhon Phanom, 700 dogs rescued

Illegal transnational dog trader caught in Nakhon Phanom, 700 dogs rescued

    วันเสาร์ ที่ 28 ก.ค. 2555

NAKHON PHANOM, July 28 -- An illicit transnational trader was arrested by a Mekong Riverine Operation Unit in the northeastern province of Nakhon Phanom, rescuing 700 dogs which were bound for Vietnam.

LCDR Kritsana Choosai, chief of a Mekong River patrol unit in Nakhon Phanom, led officials to intercept a white six-wheel truck with Sakon Nakhon-registered license plates on Nakhon Phanom-Ban Phang Road.

There were 77 cages with a total of 700 dogs loaded on the truck.

The driver, identified as Mr Salut Kotetakok, 43, was arrested and taken in for questioning.

Nakhon Phanom provincial livestock chief Pairat Pathumsuwan has coordinated with related agencies to distribute the dogs to different locations to avoid overcrowding situations, otherwise the dogs may develop infection or die.

Mr Pairat said that the Nakhon Phanom Animal Quarantine Station was now overcrowded with dogs, as there were 773 dogs in custody after an earlier arrest on July 25, where 548 dogs were rescued from a trafficking ring and sent to the station, and the total stood at 1,321 dogs.

If 700 dogs were added to this station, that would be more than 2,000 dogs, where the capacity of the facility was only 800-1,000 dogs, he said.

He said that taking care of the rescued canines cost some Bt10,000 a day.

Mr Pairat said that dog smuggling was also a problem as dog meat was still popular in some countries and illegal traders were continually trying to smuggle dogs into these countries. (MCOT online news)

Bardot appeals to Thailand over dog trade
    April 18, 2013

    AFP Š

PARIS (AFP) - Brigitte Bardot has issued an appeal to Thai Premier Yingluck Shinawatra to clamp down on the slaughtering of dogs in illegal abattoirs.

In an open letter published on Wednesday, the veteran French actress and animal rights campaigner claims 100,000 canines are being killed every year in Tha Rae in the northeast of Thailand while a similar number are exported alive to meet a similar fate.

"Tha Rae is the centre of a squalid trade in which dogs are killed for their meat or their skin in underground abattoirs after being captured in the street or stolen from their owners," Bardot writes.

"Every year, 100,000 dogs are killed there. As many if not more are illegally exported from all over Thailand in atrocious conditions, crammed and starved during a 36-hour road journey in order to be brutally killed and eaten in Vietnam."

Bardot urges Yingluck to watch a YouTube video -- "Hell on Earth - Thailand's Dog Meat Trade" -- saying it will not fail to move her.

I should add a warning that the vid is brutal

Throughout Asia the dog meat trade is flourishing.

In particular the town of Tha Rae in Sakon Nakhorn, north east Thailand has become a center for the export of dogs through Laos and into Vietnam.

Dogs are collected in exchanged for a bucket in villages throughout Thailand and then brought to Ta Rae.

In Ta Rae the dogs are separated into grades.

The best grade are shipped to Vietnam the rest are slaughtered and eaten locally.

Thousands of dogs are slaughtered and shipped across the Mae Kong river every month.

The business is worth almost as much as the drug trade and this business is legal because Thailand has no animal protection laws for the welfare of domestic animals.

We are creating a Hell on Earth for mans best friend.

Please be aware that this video is produced by Thai people who care and want to make a difference in their country.

The majority of Thai people are shocked that this practice is allowed to continue.

Most of the large scale dog meat trade in Thailand is run by Vietnamese mafia.

There have been many demonstrations at the parliament in Bangkok by Thai people to call for an animal cruelty law to be passed.

A draft law has even been handed over to the opposition.

There is a place just up the road from us that sells dogs for the food trade. When they are getting rid of the unwanted packs that roam around then all is okay. However, every now and again they start nicking pets from villages and that really pisses people off.

600 dogs saved from the pot
    26 Apr 2013

More than 600 dogs destined for restaurants in Vietnam and China were rescued in seizures in Nakhon Phanom and Sakhon Nakhon provinces on Friday, but the smugglers fled.

Nakhon Phanom navy chief Cpt Surasak Suwankesa said a pickup truck carrying 120 dogs was seized near a port in Tha Uthen district about 1am on Friday. The dogs were about to be shipped across the Mekong River.

The smugglers caught sight of officials moving in and fled, leaving the animals behind, he said.

This was the first time smugglers had been caught moving their shipments on this route.

Smugglers with dogs destined for Vietnam usually took the animals across the boundary to Laos in Baan Peang district, but police had set up many security checkpoints and smugglers had been forced to find new routes.

In Sakhon Nakhon, a team of 23-strong border patrol headed by Patiwat Khundilokphot, a provincial livestock official, raided a building in Kusumal district and rescued around 550 dogs being held in cages.

There were 53 cages, each with 10 or more dogs.

The building was in the middle of a forest, indicating it was a permanent base of the smugglers, police said.

During the raid, a truck arrived to load dogs to be shipped to Vietnam but the smugglers were able to flee, leaving the vehicle behind. Police then seized the pickup truck.

Dogs found stuffed into cages in Sakon Nakhon on April 26, 2013, ready for smuggling to Vietnam.

I would rather see people eating something than have the dirty shits all over the place. The better course would be to have Thais not just getting puppies and NOT throwing the older dogs out onto the street for EVERYONE else to take care of, but that isn't going to happen either.
