Phuket hero lawyer in apparent suicide

Phuket hero lawyer in apparent suicide

Rescue workers remove Mr Supachai's remains from his Rassada home.

    Sunday, January 16, 2011
PHUKET: A lawyer who specialized in defending poor villagers in land rights cases has been found dead in an apparent case of suicide.

The body of Supachai Singjan, 54, was found hanging by the neck from a door in his apartment in Rassada sub-district yesterday.

Mr Supachai apparently tied a bedsheet to his neck, looped it over the door and bent his knees until he was dead.

A citizen alerted Phuket City Police duty officer Kittiphum Thinthalang to the discovery around midday.

Police found no sign of injury on Mr Supachai's body except around the neck, which was bruised.

There was no sign of struggle inside the apartment, police said.

Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers sent Mr Supachai's body to the hospital, where doctors will attempt to determine the exact cause of death.

After questioning friends and relatives, police have established that on the morning of his death Mr Supachai went out to buy food and greeted his neighbours as normal. Those who saw him said he showed no signs of being suicidal.

Nevertheless, his younger brother told police that Mr Supachai “thought a lot about everything”.

As a result he was constantly under stress when he was on his own – the help he had given to villagers had not helped him, he said.

While evidence at the scene suggested suicide, police have not ruled out the possibility Mr Supachai was murdered.

For more than 20 years, Mr Supachai defended poor villagers in land-rights cases – without remuneration. He won many cases, and made many enemies in the process.

Police are considering the possibility that this angered an influential person who ordered Mr Supachai's killing.

Mr Supachai's death will sadden many in Phuket who respected him for his selfless work helping the island's poorest communities.

plus the rather startling fact that even though the police would be easily served to wrap this one up as suicide they are thinking of other angles .

    Complete and utter nonsense.

    It's called partial hanging.

After 2 seconds on google, it's surprising to see oxford journal publicizing that around 50% of hanging suicides are not fully suspended.

Around 50% of hanging suicides are not fully suspended—ligature points below head level are commonly used.
In studies reporting the position of the deceased, generally around half of the victims or fewer were found freely suspended with both their feet off the ground.9,12,17,,18 In one Australian series 8% of the 261 cases studied were found kneeling and 8% sitting.12 A forensic analysis by Khokhlov investigated tensions on the noose of a ligature exerted by different postures.19 He found that in the standing posture (with both feet on the ground) the ligature supports 65% of body weight; 54–74% in the kneeling position; 17–32% when sitting; and 18% when recumbent. Thus asphyxiation may be achieved without complete suspension.

It can be done, I've seen it in my early days as a policeman. Usually though when a bed sheet is used it's in a jail because no rope or quicker method is available. Makes little sense to do it that way if he had other options since a rope would probably be much quicker.

And yes, many hanging suicides are not fully hanging and many are by accident (David Carradine style).

I never knew anything about it until today. Of course 1 minute of research on a topic one knows nothing about, yet feel compelled to comment factually on, is a bit too much to ask of many, evidently given this thread.
