Kingdom sees rise in sex crimes
Published on September 15, 2005

An average of 12 sex crime complaints are filed with police every day, but this figure accounts for only 5 per cent of the sex crimes that actually take place, a National Economic and Social Develop-ment Board report said yesterday.

The number of juvenile sex violations has increased 39 per cent in the last year to 2,416, said NESDB secretary-general Amphon Kittiamphon, referring to research carried out in the second quarter of the year.

Around 80 per cent of rapists and child molesters are close to their victims, who are often family members, relatives, co-workers and lovers.

A total of 10,630 complaints regarding illicit websites were reported to authorities between April and June, compared to 4,266 in the first three months this year.

Eighty per cent of the websites contained pornographic material or offered sex toys and prostitutes.

The number of trials for sex crimes has tripled in the past 10 years and the rate of sex crimes in Bangkok accounted for 12 per cent of reported cases nationwide.

The rate of rape-and-murder crimes has also increased in the recent years, he said, without providing statistics. The age of sex-crime victims ranges from two to 80, including boys and men.

Citing a Civil Service Commission report, Amphon said female civil servants lodged 13 complaints over sexual harassment against their superiors in a one-month period – July 1 to August 2.
