I agree with Beadle. It's a novelty and great if you live near the stations (or a hotel) but otherwise it's at least one taxi and then the train. Makes little sense given the cost and convenience of the Meter Taxis.
It's possible that one could transfer to the Skytrain at Phaya Thai, but unless your home/hotel is right on the BTS route - few people would put up with all that - it doesn't save much time and isn't much cheaper.
Add in the uncertainty of checking your bags in at Makasan.. Does this mean I get on at Phaya Thai, the alight at Makasan, check my bags in there, get back on the f'ing train - continue to the airport?? Come on..no way and as Crazy Dog says - the Skytrain is not the London Undeground and can you imagine dozens of big farangs and their suitcases and backpacks pusing their way onto the skytrain?
Like most things in Thailand it was conceived simply so that the well-connected families and their extended family businesses could skim money from it. As usual, it wasn't thought through as convenience and logic wasn't the point of building it..
