UK backpackers to Thailand top travel insurance claims

UK backpackers to Thailand top travel insurance claims
    11 January 2010

British backpackers taking trips to Thailand top the number of people who filed travel insurance claims in 2009, it was reported.

Insurance firm InsuranceandGo said backpackers’ claims following a trip to Thailand account for 22 percent of all claims filed last year.

InsuranceGo founder Perry Wilson said that the jump in the number of travel insurance claims also highlights the growing number of crimes against tourists because of the lingering economic crunch.

After Thailand, British backpackers to Australia comprise the next group filing travel insurance claims, followed by visitors to India.

Wilson said, “We believe crime around the world is increasing because of the global economic crisis, which is why we are seeing a big rise in claims.”

He added that the annual travel insurance claims filed by UK backpackers amounted to more than £6 million, with personal luggage claims accounting for 40 percent of this total, and medical expenses more than 33 percent.

Lost documents and lost money accounted for more than 10 percent of claims.

    Absolutely.

Overstay or just run out of dosh and it's off to the local cop shop to declare the theft of the expensive camera, video, guitar or whatever.

Cops give you a letter saying you've informed 'em and it's a substantiated claim.

    Money for old rope.

    Thieving unwashed scum.

I see those two lying UK tarts in S America got off on appeal as they ruled the cops should not have searched their belongings the way they did.

As someone who had to get a police report to replace a lost savings passbook, it took 4 minutes and 10 baht.

So it's little wonder the pesky little backpackers are all at it.

Totally meaningless figure unless we are told what percentage of their customers come to Thailand. If 22% of their customers come to Thailand then the figures are average.

Norwich Insurance came up with similar figures two years ago.

Highlights no more than a growing number of claims from tourists, with no direct correlation to crime, the economic crunch, or the preference of crooked travellers for Thailand over anywhere else.

Way back when a friend of mine sometimes financed his airfare like this. arrive, go to the cops, declare your backpack stolen, and pick up a cheque for $700 when back home. I meant to do it too but was never organized (or poor?) enough. Guess the word has spread.

I am surprised anyone even offers travel insurance anymore. Increase in crime - yes: Insurance fraud.

Don't know where you guys are living but if it's in Thailand then you all must be fast asleep. I personally and many many people i know who live there say the place is a hive of thieves. Of course foreigners are a number one target and as the thieves are organised it's big business. Sure they do it to each other. How many sex workers are there ? now multiply that by 2 or 3 and there you have a rough idea of what the tourist is up against. It's not only theft in Thailand that we have to deal with ,,,sadly. Wake up guys.

"people i know who live there" come on Billy its "who live here". And its not only the young. I was once called to a hotel to investigate the guest room door lock (part of my work) which was picked with a credit card like piece of plastic (found in the hallway) as told by the middle aged Englishman who lost many valuables. My survey revealed it to impossible to pick that lock in that particular way and I informed the hotel owner accordingly. I felt disgusted seeing this older guy sitting on his bed with his grand daughter (Thai hooker) pretending to be a victim while trying (and succeeding) to scam his insurance provider.

    Load of bollocks !

The majority of claims here in Thailand from tourists are from comfortably well off Europeans stopping in 3+star hotels .
