AS far as Asian prsion systems go Think Thailand is probably the most Humane. Not alot of info but fromthe ones I've visited they look about like some medium security prison from California. I cannot be too sure but I think similar to mexico you can arrange 'family visits' (one of my all time favorites, my first marriage was so I could get 'em) and arrange to have food/other items sent in.

This is probably a subject for another thread, but given a choice, this very minute make up my mind, I'd opt to stay here. But then I have a bit moe experience in these things than Karr has. The perception that US prisons are Hotels is rife throughout society. No doubt given the choice he would opt for a place he felt more "protected" the fool.

Well, that's why much of the right wants to clamp down on those 'fun' prisons. I disagree with that, I think we incarcerate too many and for the wrong things and do very little if anything to make sure they improve themselves instead of getting worse. Non-violent offenders should never be locked up with violent ones, as a start.

I think the problem about the 'hotel' mentality stems from the white collar criminals who generally get to choose their prison and tend to get amenities that most don't (and that's really all we see on TV). Even in college I took several classes on social problems and the general consensus among the professors was that American prisons were better and more humane than foreign ones (again, one of them used the 'hotel' analogy and talked about conjugal visits, steak, lobster, etc. at the Federal level). The ones I have personally been in were fairly new facilities (well, 14 years ago) and only housed low security offenders. I imagine I'd rather walk through the Bronx at night then spend time in the general population of a medium to high security facility.

I apologize if I made it imply that I thought all prisons here were like Holiday Inns. That isn't the case.

it's only virtual hotels when you are a wall street white collar caught in high profile frauds. I am sure Martha went into one of them as most CEOs who have been jailed.

This is the thing that gets me. The folks offered the short stays in them "country-clubs are usually well-educated, from high-earning careers. They "know better" they are then offered a place where education and "self Improvement are hiughly available.

What the fuck? these greedy bastard knew what they were doing they were earning excellent money, and had the advantage of an education. These are the professional crooks, they do not need "rehabilitation" THEY NEED TO BE PUNISHED!!! Lock 'em away in shit-hole joints with cold water showers and 5 to a cell. The folks that never had an opportunity to make decent wage started stealing & killing at 12 - 13 to survive are the ones that need the country club atmosphere the eduication the "rehabilitation."

It will always boil down to money if got a lawyer that wil lmake the prison systems sit up and answer to the abuses you don't get abused. Some poor schmuck with a PD? Fuck 'im.

I'd rather be in an American or Wester country prison than any prison in a country like Turkey, Thailand or any Asian country for that matter.

FF is right though that many American prisons are down right dangerous places to be. And we seem to have a decent track record and reputation for have incarcerated criminals who love to kill convicted paedophiles ... behind bars. That guy Jeffery Dahmer didn't last long once he was inside.

My brother spent a couple of years at the Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio ... it wasn't no picnic. Especially for a fella who is nearly a cripple.

The prisons here in Japan aren't heated or air conditioned. And they only get to talk about 30 minutes per day. They aren't allowed to speak or read anything but Japanese. Even if they have visitors they are not allowed to speak (respond) in their native tongue.

I've been inside three prisons in Washington State... McNeil Island, Gig Harbor (Women) and Shelton ... none of these are any better than meduim security. Pretty sterile environments ... the women's prison isn't a good place for a male to start a corrections career.

IMHO ... working in county jails can be damn near as (if not more) dangerous as working in the prisons with the felons.

    Fuckin' laughable.

    Now...

I wonder, will the call for mandatory police screening and the claims that foreign teaching in Thailand is a haven for paedophiles be dropped, to be replaced with mandatory psychological evaluation and claims that foreign teaching in Thailand is a haven for fuckin' nutters?

(This must be confusing the absolute hell out of Thai authorities. They would have no idea how to react now! )

I would have thought that the reaction of the Thai authorities will be a huge sigh of relief that they've been relieved of the burden of checking through thousands of docments they can't read, and then perhaps an extra large bowl of noodles to celebrate.

Yes, but now parents will be insisting on checking the sanity of foreign teachers instead.

That is significantly more difficult than a criminal check.

Hell, most people I have met here in education suffer from some degree of insanity, myself included!

Why else would they do it?

I suspect you guess wrong, I think those charges were dropped to clear his way back to Colorado....

lets be honest after the initial announcement, it was plainly obvious that this guy had nothing to do with it.

Free first class trip home.....nice idea.

this shows what the common 'stiff' is worth

    theory: innocent before proven guilty...yea
theory: proof is the burden of the prosecution...sure

fact: jumping to conclusions is enough...I hate constituted authority

or did Karr conjure up all this just for a free ride back thr USofA?

the OP is spot on re. what are the LoS Best gonna do now? Apologize?

anyway one big fucking monkey wrench has been flicked into the tefl gears! Thailand the safe heaven for criminals, safe harbor for kiddy effers... go Karr go, you are a nut case no doubt, but you sure did bring this LoS pot to a boil

The System does not give a shit about us but we have been made a tad more aware - as if we did not already know- of how much they lie, deceive us at every possible turn

they had zero credibility before, they have just re-enforced the fact even further.

It's ok, I've hacked into the Ministry's computer system and downloaded the sanity test.

All answers could be misconstrued, so we are forced to reply with a 'Don't know' to all questions. It doesn't pay to have an opinion.

We all bust on the EFL industry from time to time.

I have, and still do sometimes.

But remember: the negative comments about EFL in this thread is regarding THAILAND EFL.

Where I'm at, it's a lot different. As well as other countries.

    Thanks for the kind words.

But the percentage of the folks you describe seem a lot less here.

There are people who care. There are people who are trying to make a difference.

There are people here by choice.
