Nakhon Si Thammarat _ A village head and his aide arrested in possession of a stolen Buddha statue yesterday allegedly admitted to a string of thefts from temples in the South.
Voravut Sodrung, 33, a village head of tambon Tha Uthen in Surat Thani's Kanchanadit district, and his aide Sanan Roojaeng, 35, were apprehended shortly after two men made off with a 38cm high statue from Wat Khruachuay in Nakhon Si Thammarat's Sichon district yesterday.
Police stopped the two men at a junction in tambon Tha Sala and found the stolen statue in their vehicle, along with a .38 pistol, six bullets and equipment for breaking open iron gates. Temple abbot Phrakhru Vithan Sangkhakit had earlier reported the theft to police, saying two men entered the temple and made off with the Buddha statue.
Police said Mr Voravut admitted to having stolen Buddha statues and antiquities from 39 temples in the South.
Most of the stolen items were sold to dealers in Bangkok, he said.
