    Dutch man caught shoplifting

    Our News is Always New
    LATEST NEWS

    Thursday 13th July 2006
Dutch man caught shoplifting at Tops Supermarket in Central Pattaya.
Pattaya Police were called to the Tops supermarket in Central Pattaya after a security guard working at the Supermarket had detained a foreign national accused of shoplifting. Police arrived and formally arrested Mr. Moezel aged 68 from Holland. He had been stopped after he had left the supermarket with two packs of imported Moccana coffee hidden inside a newspaper. Mr. Moezel was taken to Pattaya Police Station where he refused to explain the reason behind the theft which baffled Police as he had paid for milk and other provisions and clearly had enough money to pay for the coffee as well. His ultimate fate is unknown as Police wait to speak with Tops Management to see if the case can be cleared without further Police intervention or if they wish to peruse a criminal case against the accused.

Isn't it up to the police to 'peruse' a criminal case?

Nope, it's up to the company if they want to press charges or settle for a cash settlement or just drop the whole thing, if they go for cash the security guard will get a percentage.

I think what stroll meant was that the police will peruse the case but it up to the company to pursue it.

    DD answered it.

I thought when it's a criminal offence it's the police duty to treat it as such, irrespective of what the company may want.
I forgot the police have more of a mediating role for minor stuff here.

Yes, this is true, give us (the police) enough money and we will forgive ANYTHING.

They may officially mediate minor stuff, and I agree, it's just 'common sense' (Marmitism).

When it comes to more serious offences, it's called corruption.

Can you spot the difference here, Eliminator?

I'm not disagreeing with you that the police can and in some cases should mediate cases. The biggest problem I see with the police is that they will go whatever way gets them the most reward. Posted some time back was a farang guy that was jacked up by some Thais for him supposedly to have hit their car while parking. The end result was that the farang had to pay for damge that he had not done. The Thais got money from him and then paid the cops for going in their favor.

A Thai friend of mine was robbed last month by people on a motorcycle. She was robbed of more than 30k baht as she was headed to a bank. Other Thais said that they knew the person but the police did nothing. My friend believes that the police just took a percentage from the thief and that was it.

It might be that the old man is sufferring from alzheimers and doesn't even remember doing it. In this instance it's right for the police to mediate.
