MICT instructs ISPs to block over 60 ‘red’ websites

During the unrest this week, the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology sent e-mails to Internet Service Providers and webmasters to block websites which support the red-shirts.

Since April 13, the Director of MICT’s Information Technology Supervision Office, Aree Jiworarak, has sent a series of emails, citing the Emergency Decree, instructing ISPs and webmasters to block websites associated with the red-shirt demonstrators, with lists of the websites attached.

He also asks ISPs and webmasters to report back to him on their implementation, and inform him of any websites that might violate the Emergency Decree.

How many wesites in total have been blocked since 2006 coup and how many are being blocked since Abhisit weasled his way into power?


Abhisit Vejjajiva is proving to be no more than a nasty two faced puppet of the elite. Preventing people to use the Internet to verify the truth for themselves reeks of a system designed to keep the poor ignorant: and all with the approval from the top.

Pro-red websites blocked, radio stations raided

Since the state of emergency was put in effect on Sunday, more than 60 pro-Thaksin Shinawatra websites have been blocked and the offices of community radio stations in three provinces and that of satellite TV channel D-Station raided.

Police yesterday raided the offices of D-Station on Lat Phrao road and the offices of community radio stations in Udon Thani, Chiang Mai and Lampang as per orders from the Emergency Execution Command (EEC), the agency involved with handling the country under the Emergency Decree.

In following the EEC order, the Information Technology Regulation Office gave Internet service providers a list of 67 websites it deemed as instigating insurrection to block since Monday evening, said Aree Jiwararak, director of the Information Technology Regulation Office.

The websites that have been blocked include Sameskybooks.org, Newskythailand.com and Sericon.com. On some sites only the content was blocked, while some could not be accessed at all.

Asked if the blockades would be cancelled if the emergency were to be lifted, Aree said he had to consult with the prime minister before doing anything.

Supinya Klangnarong, a media rights activist, said people should not be blocked from expressing their opinions online because mainstream media had lost its credibility in providing unbiased reports.

"If the government threatens online liberty, that would boomerang back. The government should allow Internet to be the space where people can freely search for information they want and express what they think. If not, the things could get more severe," Supinya said.

Thanapon Eiwsakul, owner of the blocked Sameskybooks.org, said the government could not really block any websites as such, because people could find ways in anyway. Moreover, censoring might make people believe in fake reports.

"Since people could not use the Internet to verify the truth for themselves, they would be vulnerable to believing rumours that might not be true," Thanapon said.

yes , but he had the mandate of the people from his democratic election which meant that the people wanted him to censor anything critical of him that might smear the reputation his spin doctors had expensively crafted - the supporters might know that he didn't give a sh1t about them at all and was instead more concerned about his smart business machinations with state power and money behind them.

Given that those stations and websites were inciting people to violence and terrorism and advocated the overthrow of the government what do you expect the government to do? They have abused their freedom of speech and committed treason, they should accept the consequences.

They seem to argue that because Thaksin interfered with the media then it's ok for Abhisit to be shutting down websites en masse, arresting people and handing down severe sentences for Lese Majeste and spending millions of taxpayers' money on 'war rooms' to monitor the internet.

Heck, they'll excuse anything this government does because they think Thaksin is the devil.

Facts of the matter are that the Junta and this subsequent puppet government have been far more eager and willing to censor the media. Indeed, Thailand's press freedom index has tumbled since 2006 as just one example.

What government would announce that prosecuting Lese Majeste was their priority given the economic and political problems Thailand faces?

And interestingly enough when Thaksin attacked the media they fought back tooth and nail. This time most of them (with some honourable exceptions) queued up to show their bellies and be muzzled.
