Complete tragedy, which could have been avoided or seriously limited. Those fire investigators sure are efficient at coming to a conclusion. Unfortunately this kind of event is not just a problem in Thailand. I would say its a huge problem in most poorly developed countries. It all starts with the construction methods, fire engineering solutions put into building a structure, are enough fire exits put in to allow a given amount of people out per minute. What materials are used to furnish the place? Are they fire retardant? Are sprinkler systems fitted. Until people are prosecuted, or someone in a prominent position loses a loved one, I think nothing will change.

I expect the owner of this establishment would of had a video surveilance system set up in his own home and to monitor what was going on at the venue.

I hope this is the case as if the fire was deliberately lit or caused by random stupidity someone should have to pay.

Was there even an emergency exit? Was there a sprinkler system?? Not that common in Thailand, these things cost extra!

What a horrible start to the year.

    R.I.P. to all those dead.

Slightly off topic but did anything ever happen to the owners of that club in Pattaya ( Club 99 or 69 I think) that burnt down a couple of years ago??

This is a quite bizarre assumption. You certainly have some off the cuff ideas LT.

On Santika's homepage you can notice the flame icon for the event on the 31st. Just about RIGHT NOW the webmaster for that page should remove that "hot" icon...

    from the blogworld ..................

Said a witness: The blaze was caused by a “special-effect” firework on the main stage to usher in the new year:

And the fire made the ceiling, which was made largely of inflammable sound-proof material. And the ceiling caught fire, the fire spread very quickly and you can only imagine the panic of the trapped inside.

Firework inside a building … Confirmed a policeman: ”It appears that the fire started from the area of the stage where a band was playing. There were some pyrotechnics and it appears that they started the blaze.”

Awful. They should close every club and venue until it's been inspected by "qualified" authorities and judged safe. They don't pass the inspection they don't get insurance, no insurance = no license.

Will this add to the so called downturn in tourism?

Good idea, but i guess the clubs that are in the risk zone would try to pay off the 'inspectors' to get a clean bill of health.

I say install mandatory sprinklers or hi-fog systems in all nightclubs. Doubt i'll see that within this century though.

I'm sorry, I'm confused - which one were you referring to: Abhisit, or Wongsanawat - seeing as how they both were put in place in the exact same manner.

I'm confused too, which post number did I write that?

What a ridiculous comment to make at a time like this. Perhaps you are musing whether it will increase global warming as well?

I'm simply questioning whether this will add to the fears of tourists? That being the case, and given that loss of tourism seems to be about the only thing LOS authorities react too, it may be they do enforce more stringent regulations in such venues and possibly save the lives of others.

If any of the people that were lighting off fireworks made it out, lets hope they are caught.

Actually, it is quite common for CCTV to be monitored and recorded off premises.

In the real world yes, but this is Thailand. Also internet enabled to the owners home is another thing.
