An Australian submarine has fired a new heavy torpedo for the first time and sunk a US warship.
But, rest easy, the dramatic event was part of an exercise and not a sudden deterioration in relations with the US.
The Minister for Defence, Joel Fitzgibbon, congratulated the crew of the submarine HMAS Waller on the sinking.
The new heavyweight torpedo, jointly developed by Australia and the US, was fired yesterday during the Rim of the Pacific 2008 (RIMPAC 08) exercise.
Multiple navies are taking part in the exercise off the coast of Hawaii, which featured the planned sinking of a retired US warship.
The MK 48 Mod 7 Common Broadband Advanced Sonar System (CBASS) torpedo is considered the world's premier submarine-launched torpedo.
Its sonar enhancements make it effective in shallow water.
"For Australia in particular, this exercise has been a successful demonstration of the ongoing capability of the Collins Class submarine," Mr Fitzgibbon said.

Today the RAN is one of the largest and most sophisticated naval forces in the Pacific region and has a significant presence in the Indian Ocean

The RAN currently operates 7 main classes of vessels, including:
Collins class Submarine 6 Diesel-electric powered patrol submarines for deep ocean patrols

On Monday, June 14, 1999, the Australian Collins class submarine HMAS Farncomb fired a Mark-48 war-shot torpedo at the 28-year-old former Destroyer Escort Torrens. The firing was part of the Collins class trials requirements and was designed to validate the submarine's combat system. The submerged Farncomb fired the Mark-48 torpedo at the stationary hulk of the 2700-ton Destroyer Escort from over the horizon.

Nor will it undo the loss of AMERICAN lives by "friendly fire". It happens in military situations, always has, always will.
