Bangkok Post : Kwanchai jailed for attack on PAD

Kwanchai jailed for attack on PAD

The chairman of the Khon Rak Udon Group, Kwanchai Sarakham, or Praipana, has been jailed by the Udon Thani Court for his involvement in an attack by a group of red-shirts on People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) demonstrators in Udon Thani province in 2008.

The attack took place on July 24, 2008 at Prachak Silpakhom Public Park in Muang district where the PAD was holding a rally. A number of people were injured, some seriously.

Seven PAD members, led by Charoen Mookachornpan, filed a lawsuit against Kwanchai on charges of attempted murder, bodily assault inflicting serious injuries, and destroying public property.

The court dropped the attempt murder charge against Kwanchai, but found him guilty of the other charges, and initially sentenced him to four years imprisonment without suspension and a fine of 350,000 baht.

Because of his confession, the jail term was commuted to two years and eight months.

After hearing the verdict, Kwanchai filed a request for bail, offering 200,000 baht as collateral.

He said he would appeal the verdict.

In this case, the Udon Thani Court sentenced Mr Kwanchai to two years and eight months without suspension.

Mr Kwanchai was freed on 300,000 bail and took his case to the Appeals Court.

The Appeals Court upheld the jail sentence on Monday.

Mr Kwanchai submitted a request for fresh bail, putting up 500,000 baht as surety, announcing he would fight the case in the Supreme Court.

I have no comment on the merits of the case, or the sentence, beyond the obvious. Yingluck has been in office for over 16 months now, and was legitimately elected with a large majority. So why are we still reading about UDD protesters being jailed, but not one PAD protester (who's alleged offences predate these by a couple of years) has yet been held accountable? May be time for the UDD to get back on the streets, and demand Justice...

Hardline red-shirt leader surrenders, faces murder charges

Kwanchai Sarakham, a hardline red-shirt leader from Udon Thani, on Wednesday turned himself in to authorities to serve two years in jail for conspiring to murder rival yellow shirts.

The Supreme Court last week found him guilty in absentia of attempted murder and physical assault.

Also known as Kwanchai Praipanna, he was president of the Khon Rak Udon Club, a red-shirt group in the northeastern province.

He was accused of attempted murder and assault by seven yellow shirts in attacking a rally in Nongprajak Park in 2008 that had left many people seriously injured.

Both the Criminal and Appeals Courts found Kwanchai guilty and sentenced him to two years and eight months in jail and fined him Bt350,000 plus statutory interest before the Supreme Court commuted the prison term to two years.
