Well, this thread has gotten altogether wacky, hasn't it?

I followed the link to the offending speech which was, as was previously mentioned, in Thai. It appears as though the offending speech has been highlighted in red throughout the article. My Thai's okay but I tried to read the first red paragraph and couldn't really put it together. Several references to Khun Thaksin but that was all I got. Thai to English dictionary & transliteration might be of help if you cut and paste. It will come out very stilted but may give an idea as to what "Da Tompedo" is saying. Or someone who's actually fluent or has access to someone fluent in English and Thai could hammer out a quick summary...

I could be wrong and the offending speech is not in fact in red. The comments at the bottom are more fun and easier to read.

Many (or most) here are expats. What seems to be a "bad attitude" is nothing more than our observations. That said, it is NOT our country so it is unlikely that complaints by farangs will be given any credence.

For anyone to talk as badly about him as I am told this woman did is beyond belief for me---she should be locked away for a long time.
Nice, "enlightened" western attitude you have there. Keeping one's mouth shut does not mean agreement. Let's apply the same laws to your home country and see how you like them, then. Those of us who live here, should be aware that some things are best not discussed. The cost of living and other amenities make it worthwhile for us to make it our home. "Going native" will serve no one's interests, certainly not ours.

I would suggest to you that corruption is certainly endemic in the Uk and possibley also throughout the western world.

The king here is the one unifying factor for most of the people and having seen many of the outstanding efforts he has made to improve the lives of the Thai people their love for him is well deserved.

I pity this wonderful man who really cares for his people and must be hurting very badly and seriously worried about the future of his country.

For anyone to talk as badly about him as I am told this woman did is beyond belief for me---she should be locked away for a long time.
Your protestations of admiration, and pity(?), for the Monarch notwithstanding, I have to say, Bullshit. To be "locked away for a long time" for criticizing a public figure? The Lese Majeste laws are proof this country has yet to lose that Feudal mentality. For what it's worth, you could construe the use of this law as a violation in, and of, itself; with the Royal attitude towards the law and his own call for repeal.

I find it sad that this discussion has degraded into a few morons making it a "Thailand, love it or leave it" type debate. Simple fact his THE PM is using lese majeste to silence opposing viewpoints and the power structure within any opposition he or his party faces.

So. We not only have the top politico in the country using lese majeste law against the monarch's own wishes (lese majeste violation in spirit is it not?) But using it to silence political opposition.

The Issue at hand should not be what was said by the accused, rather the blatant effort to silence the opposition and why he deems calling up this draconian law to do so necessary. Sadly, the majority of the population's interest will end up much the same place as this discussion; where the "terrible things" said are more important than the motivations and underhanded behavior of ol' Frog Face himself.

The more I hear from the PAD and the more I see lese majeste being used in Thailand, the more my once considerable respect for the Thai monarchy crumbles.

God knows I have no love for Thaksin and his kleptocractic ways, or the bunch of gangsters and thieves who make up the Samak government, but they were elected, with a comfortable majority, because Thaksin was the only Prime Minister who ever showed any consideration to the rural voters whatsoever. The democrats, the people who make up the PAD and Bangkok just want the rural people of Thailand to shut up, behave themselves and keep sending a steady supply of cheap rice and workers to serve the wealthier Bangkokians.

I'm not sure this is quite true, though I'm sure both sides of the current political clusterfuck have had fun throwing LM charges at one another. The ones that have gained most media attention, though, are Jonathan Head of the BBC, and (can't remember his name) Jakarapop (?) and the speech he made at the foreign correspondents club. The PAD seized this issue to beat Samak over the head with, as Jakrapop was a member of his cabinet. The PAD have written into their proto-facist recommendation for changes in Thai poltical system that a military coup ('intervention') would be justified if the government fails to act on lese majeste.

This new arrest is Samak covering his arse so that he won't be faced with a similar situation.

Good point FF. Basically, His Highness has stated that he would like the lese majeste law repealed. So, anyone who tries to enforce the law is, well, committing lese majeste now aren't they? They are insulting the monarchy by not abiding by its wishes.

If he really wanted the law gone it would be gone tomorrow.

Fact is it is another great tool for the Palace propaganda machine.
