| The Dog | Thai Police checking on foreigners, mainly teachers CRIME PREVENTION / CHILD SEX ABUSE Police checking on foreigners Police are making background checks on more than 1,000 foreigners, mainly teachers, working in Thailand after a spate of arrests for alleged child sex abuse, a senior officer said yesterday. ''It shouldn't be enough to wear white shirts and have a university degree. We need to know their backgrounds,'' said Pol Col Apichart Suribunya, head of the liaison office for Interpol. Police would seek records of any convictions in home countries and from Thai immigration police before foreigners were hired as teachers. ''We are scrutinising more than 1,000 foreign teachers working in Thailand,'' he said. ''Until now, educational institutions would only look at their academic qualifications, but that is not enough.'' ''It's easy for teachers to gain trust and respect from people, especially in Asian cultures which hold teachers in high regard,'' he added. He did not say how police had chosen the foreigners in question. His comments follow the arrest on Tuesday of Briton Paul Jones, 39, who has lived in Thailand for seven years. Police said they raided his Bangkok apartment and found a computer containing hundreds of photos of naked boys and girls. Mr Jones was a teacher at a Bangkok private school, police said. His apprehension followed the arrest of Canadian-born teacher Christopher Neil on Oct 19 after a worldwide Interpol campaign to track down a man seen in internet photos abusing Asian boys. only authorised institutions can get hold of a CRB report. The Thai Government isn't one of them. I suspect this is more bluster. | |

| Nasty, nasty foreigners again. I'm beginning to get the distinct smell of hypocrisy in this whole thing. I'd be prepared to bet that the falang paedo scum percentage of the total teacher population, is minuscule, compared to what the Thais get up to. These folks are in denial & seem to be looking at every possible scapegoat they can drag up. Land of sleeze applies the squeeze!

| I suspect you're right. Actually I think that's why they have pointedly refused to disclose how they are going to select the people to check, they simply don't know how they are going to work it themselves.

| ^ not sure that aggravated assault from 13 years ago is really the sort of thing they are looking for Nikolarse. I got one of those police report things just in case they asked me when I renewed my visa. it said "no recore found... spent you see" in any case, immigration didn't ask for it.

| The Dog | I wonder what percentage of teachers in Thailand are working illegally? I would think more are illegal than legal, ok it is quite easy for the police to find the legal ones from the labour dept, but wouldn't it be more sensible that they should be finding the illegal ones. |

| What is a 'child'? I’d like to know what your definition of pedophile is. Under 18? (one day under?). How about a willing 15 year old sexually active teenager—I won’t call her a ‘girl’ since she can get pregnant—should a man go to jail for years for having sex with a willing 15 year old teenager? 15 seems to be a cutoff age in Thailand below which the ‘crime’ is prosecuted more seriously, and the adult ‘offender’ seems to receive a longer sentence. Wikipedia: “Pedophilia is the primary or exclusive sexual attraction by adults to prepubescent youths. …The term pedophile is also used colloquially to denote an adult who is sexually attracted to adolescents or youths below the local age of consent.” So, the word can mean two different things, depending on what the agenda of the prosecutors/accusers is. I understand why there are laws against having sex with children, children being defined as not having reached sexual maturity (‘prepubescent youths’ in Wikipedia’s terminology). I don’t understand the ‘foaming-at-the-mouth’ ‘string-em-up’ mentality when two people who aren’t children decide to have sex. In the United States female teachers have sex with their male students and often only get slapped on the wrist. These female teachers are not met with the same kind of hysteria guaranteed to hit a man if he has sex with a 17 year old, or a 16 year old, or a 15 year old. I remember a couple of female teachers and other older women from my teenage years who I wished would have had sex with me! It would have been an educational experience. A 16 year old boy can have sex with a 15 year old girl (I did when I was 16), and not worry about facing a long jail sentence. “Aw, look at the cute kids having sex.” But, watch out if you are a man over 21. “You monster! I hope you have lot of money for a defense attorney! Cause we’re gonna lock you up and throw away the key! Bad, bad man!” Teachers, and others in positions of power and authority over teenagers, are understandably expected not to have sex with their students/underlings. But when there is no ‘power dynamic’, and the sex is consensual, willing, loving and joyful—and the youth is over 15, let’s say--then why throw a man in jail for years for this? (Isn’t 15 the age of consent in one or more states in the USA?) |

| Teakdoor helps prevent pedophilia Quote:
Regarding your statements elsewhere that Teakdoor could be interpreted as ‘promoting’ pedophilia by its numerous posts on the subject, and could ‘help’ pedophiles in their search for prey—I think the opposite is true: would-be pedophiles reading Teakdoor will surely be sobered by what awaits them in Thailand if they are caught. They will actually be less likely to come to Thailand to attempt sex with prepubescent youths. In other words, Teakdoor serves as a deterrent to this type of behavior. The Thai authorities should give Teakdoor a medal for crime awareness and prevention—not shut them down as you hysterically have suggested elsewhere may happen.

The ones working for language schools are probably more illegal than legal. Bear in mind that the last two caught, were legal.
