JPPR2, that is the middle class that also grows in Thailand like in China.
There are always some that stand on the right foot and making their little fortune that allows them to show their wealth (and Asians are especially good in that). But the poor class gets more poor and when the minimum existence is reached the next clash is on the way. The poor class will be abused again by a rich fellow who wants more power and the circle closes once again.

    @Farang Ky Ay

Your words: "Not a surprise for anyone here I think, I've yet to meet a Thai which has no debts... especially among the apparently most affluent ones (nice cars, last iPhone, junkets abroad etc)."

See my wife, she is 17 years married to an offshore worker and was teaching me to handle money. I'll be honest I was bad in it.
She still can't drive any vehicle, We have still no Flat screen TV in the house neither a car or luxury motorbike..
Her saying is that all is temporary and will break one day and when it breaks it makes Problems, so why have it in first instance?
Also I will break one day and will not be able working offshore any more, but then a Roof over the head, food and medicine has to be available as the only things you need in life.
Another of her saying: Today you want it desperately when you see it, tomorrow its standing in your way. If you really want it come not before after tomorrow back.

Money has lost a lot of ranks in my 17 years in Thailand with her at my side and the funny thing is, before in Europe with my ex wife I used a lot of energy to get more and it was never something left.

There are some woman out there but they will not sitting in a luxury car or walking their Gucci handbags in a Shopping mall.
They are in their backyard garden wearing a straw hat, pruning trees, mowing the lawn, removing the dogs shit as a value for the mango tree, daydreaming and singing Thai songs while they do it.
And as a little Luxury she treats herself with is
she will call the som tam motorbike stand whenever she feels like that and thinks by herself how great it is not to have the need to find first 60 baht to do so..

The countries all over the wold needs actually precise thinkers like that. Keeping the own wallet closed and not thinking power competition but be happy when cash flows in and use it wisely for the future..

Yes, a bit of a sabbatical was in order, didn't like my private life being paraded around and used. It seems TD has become a bit milder, but lacking people like Willy, Slackula etc... but I see Ant is still going strong.

Things are ok, thanks. Business is good, keeps me busy and traveling. Weather here sucks big hairy ones - my better half owes me big time for moving here and making me fly long haul all the time.

Life as nidhogg still balanced nicely?

some thais actually choose a career based on the access they will have to loans like teachers who over the decades have had access to easy loans and most are in heavy debt, likely never to be repaid.

^ yes, I think at one point Finance discipline was to be taught at schools, I wondered where they would find enough teachers with the required skills ... But it could work if they teach on a do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do basis. I don't know if it has been implemented.

Much deeper than such simple and surface entities that you offer.
Almost impossible to rescind the forced upon and diffused ideals of mindless consumption and the unnecessary need for want on an already capitulated social order.

yep, another thing about thai and finances i don't get is many bangkokians drive fancy cars and live in tiny condos.

seems the opposite would be a better lifestyle.

Me too Nid, I grew up with some fairly hard times that meant i have avoided debt at all means - never had a credit card or loan apart from a mortgage.

Mrs Toot seems to have had the same background, some would say (in Thailand) she's a tight bitch but in reality she's had a family (Thai side - father) who were disowned by her Mother side ( Chinese) because they were considered wasters and indolent. Once her mother died and following her abandonment by her Thai husband (lasted 3 years) she was literally left holding the baby - and family. They ( older siblings) took all the money, gold and sold what they could, all her careful mother had saved and squandered it leaving the family indebted.

My Mrs whilst getting over all this shit as a Pharmaceutical Chemist then got sacked by a jealous good looking colleague who was fukin the boss because she didn't like my Mrs, who was qualified, experienced and good at her job.

Upshot - she had to find a quick fix - the family had a resto and two shite holes in a slum in Lad Prao - she did em up a bit and sold them without title turned and the profit over doing the same in Samrong three times and got her self 3 small restos and bought two groups of "Room" outskirts of BKK with Titles. I joined in along the timeline but can't take credit for much of her acumen - that's her chinese side.

No help from her Mares family, her elder siblings and put her younger sister through Uni with my help and she graduated 2 years ago and their father was in tears with pride - all in to this day she got no debt not even a car loan - when she first went to buy one she went from the resto a bit scruffy and they ignored her in the showroom and a minion came over (lower end sales bloke) to ask if she'd like a drink etc. She said if you have that car for sale today she'll drive it away - the kiddy had to speak to the boss who'd ignored her, he came over and she said she didn't want to deal with him only the kiddie if she was going to buy it..... gave the bloke a proper dressing down.

Funny thing this is, we've been umming and ahhing about retirement dates, mine that is and she keeps telling me just leave she'll sort it money wise etc - i'm not broke btw - great lass.

Dear Prudence. I've heard that song before.

It was Lincoln that said you can't build Sound Security on borrowed money. Something about strengthening the weak by weakening the strong.

    Had it on my toolbox.

    * You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
    * You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
    * You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
    * You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
    * You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
    * You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
    * You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
    * You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
    * You cannot build character and courage by destroying men’s initiative and independence.
    * You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves.

Not all. Women know. The truth is, women do not dress up for men, women dress up for other women. Always been that way. If a woman rolls up to a nice party with a knock off bag, the others will know and talk mad shit, especially in affluent areas like BKK. Maybe not so much out in the sticks but most do not know what a LV/ Chanel/ Gucci purse is. They have Hello Kitty wallets....

It's all about show and hierarchy. The same applies when they wai. Wealth is measured here not on how much money you have in the bank but how much land you have. What kind of car you have. How much gold your wife appears to have, real or fake. Thai live in a world of make believe and the only way they can do this is by buying on credit.

It's all about the now, not the future .

    Couldn't live like that myself.

Try explaining that to a Thai....
