Swimming ban lifted in Pattaya – city has no long-term waste water solution

A ban on swimming in the sea off Thailand’s famous Pattaya resort has been lifted after the condition of the sea water returned to normal with no black and foul-smelling pollutants.

However, people with allergies are warned to not swim in the sea, especially in the Na Chom Thian area where the pollution problem was at its most extreme.

Sattahip district chief officer Mr. Anucha Inthasorn and officials yesterday took samples from the sea at Na Chom Thian beach for laboratory tests as local municipal officials huddled in meetings with agencies concerned to prevent the pollution problem from recurring.

Untreated waste water, from an abandoned treatment facility in the area, leaked into the sea through an open sewer after heavy rain.

Pollution Control Department chief Pralong Damrongthai said the Pattaya City administration is empowered to deal with the effluent management problem.

He said he had sent officials to check treatment facilities at hotels, but urged the city mayor to tend to the problem of waste water discharged into the sea from all business operations in the city as well as from households.

While Pattaya is expanding, the city still lacks a proper central waste water treatment facility to cope with the increasing amount of effluent.

Swimming in Pattaya bay must be a good alternative to throwing yourself off a high building.

Yes, but in that case someone's got to clean it up.

I went into the sea for a pee off Jomtien beach. I fell over and got a mouthful of water which I spat out.
I knew what to do. I rinsed out my mouth with beer and spat out then ordered a Sangsom. I had it covered. Disinfected due to alcohol.
Two days later I was soaking the bed with the sweats, high temperature. Unable to sleep unable to wake. I thought I had flu. Similar symptoms.
Third day I started taking antibiotics and perked up, I even ate.
Fourth day to Pattaya International Hospital where they prescribed antibiotics and gave tests of samples.
I had a kidney infection but they wouldn't name it so I couldn't investigate further. And all around me at the beach kids were happily playing in the water squirting it out over each other.

I should imagine most Thai beachside towns have untreated sewage vented into the sea, with Pattaya its just the volume and the source that's even more worrying, Orrens that was likely TheGent.

I believe the Thai phrase is the poetic "Don't shit in anothers rice bowl".
For a beach resort to have dangerous water is a bit like the film Jaws and the Ibsen original "An enemy of the people". All the businesses should pay a surcharge to fund the clean up
So Pattaya should bite the bullet and clean the water.

Water situation at Na Jomtien Beach improving

BANGKOK, 21st May 2019 (NNT) - Following the discharge of wastewater into the sea at Na Jomtien Beach in Sattahip district, Chon Buri province, the situation has started to return to normal, with the water level rising and the stench subsiding, as the local municipality considers closing the sluice gate.

The water situation at Na Jomtien Beach has gradually improved, as the water became less murky than in the last few days. However, a foul smell can still be noticed along the beach. On Sunday, the Deputy District Chief of Sattahip, Wanchat Wannapram, said his district office has coordinated with relevant agencies in Pattaya to bring in more pump trucks to remove the wastewater, which will be treated. Mr. Wanchat said the district office will consider closing the sluice gate and inspecting the wastewater being released by buildings in the area.

Meanwhile, residents near Na Jomtien Beach say they have often seen wastewater being discharged into the sea, especially when there is heavy rain in the area, and they can smell the stench for one to two hours. When tourists arrived at the scene, they usually took photos and shared them on social media. As a result, fewer tourists were coming to the beach for the time being. The residents have called on the authorities to close the sluice gate and stop discharging wastewater into the sea, as it has an adverse impact on tourism and on the residents themselves.
