While there are a number of key elections being held in Asia this year, none are bigger than India's with hundreds of millions of people set to vote in the world's largest democratic exercise in history starting today.
Key points:
- Election will take place in seven phases with results announced May 23
- A party needs 272 members of parliament to gain government
- More than 15 million teenagers are expected to cast their first vote
Out of the country's 1.3 billion people, 900 million are eligible to vote.
The elections will be broken down into seven phases over several weeks from April 11 to May 19, which will see members for India's Lower House of Parliament selected, who will then choose the country's next prime minister.
The cost of the elections have been forecasted to cost some 700 billion rupees ($14 billion) — double the 2014 general election spend of 350 billion rupees ($7 billion) — which would make it the world's most expensive election.
